Overview:

The INRS Énergie Matériaux Télécommunications Research Centre (EMT) is seeking to fill three new tenure-track professorships as part of the joint research unit (UMR) between INRS and Université du Québec en Outaouais (UQO), with a strong potential for transferring knowledge and technology to users in the cybersecurity sector.

The Énergie Matériaux Télécommunications Research Centre brings together world-renowned telecommunications experts in digital technology development and other fields. UQO has been active in cybersecurity for 20 years with its computer security research lab and offers cybersecurity training with a graduate program aimed at professionals or people looking to improve their knowledge of the various aspects of cybersecurity. UQO plans to build on its educational offering in the near future with new bachelor’s and master’s programs in cybersecurity.

The INRS-UQO Joint Research Unit in Cybersecurity will provide the Outaouais region with a new cohort of scientists specialized in this priority field for Québec and all of Canada and lead to promising new partnerships with many economic players. It will be located on UQO’s Gatineau campus and dedicated to multidisciplinary research and graduate education. It will be part of Connexité, Gatineau’s innovation zone, a collaborative space designed to spur technological and social innovation in the fields of cybersecurity, digital identity, and digital wellness.

The successful candidates will join a multidisciplinary workplace comprising researchers from INRS and UQO. At INRS, 40 professors conduct highly competitive research and teach graduate students in fields such as ultrafast and integrated photonics, advanced materials, sustainable energy, environmental solutions, telecommunications systems, and nanobiotechnology. At UQO, 20 professors conduct research in fields such as cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and data science, and in applied engineering disciplines such as computer engineering and electrical engineering.

The following fields of expertise are preferred: privacy and data security; cyber-physical systems and embedded systems security; IoT, blockchain, and cloud/fog computing security; cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and autonomous cybersecurity systems; and quantum and post-quantum cryptography.

Applicants in other fields of cybersecurity will also be considered.

Main duties:

• Develop their own independent, competitive innovative research program • Secure funding for their research program through external grants from public and private organizations as well as industry partnerships as required • Work with existing research teams at EMT and UQO and develop or maintain partnerships with groups outside the two institutions • Participate in teaching and training activities, particularly as part of the centre’s graduate programs, and in the supervision of postdoctoral fellows and research staff

Standard requirements and skill sets:

• PhD in computer science or a relevant discipline • Strong demonstrated R&D expertise permitting the development of a robust, innovative research program OR, for young researchers, strong R&D and leadership potential in the field • Expertise that complements current expertise at EMT (https://inrs.ca/en/research/professors/) • Experience in and/or aptitude for teaching and supervising graduate students and fellows • Ability to work within multidisciplinary research teams and networks • Ability to work with industry partners • Entrepreneurial qualities (or demonstrated potential thereof) and ability to secure research funding from granting agencies

Working language:

The working language is French. Fluency in English is required. Applicants who are not fully fluent in French are strongly encouraged to apply. If they are chosen for the position, the necessary resources will be put at their disposal to learn French.
