Ontario Research Chair, Science Policy (Biotechnology & Society or AI & Society) Department of Science and Technology Studies, Faculty of Science, York University

The Department of Science and Technology Studies in the Faculty of Science, York University invites highly qualified candidates to apply for an Ontario Research Chair (tenure track or tenured) in Science Policy at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level, to commence July 1, 2022. The position is a member of a newly created Public Policy Research Cluster located at the Markham Campus of York University for which a total of three Ontario Research Chairs will be hired. The Research Cluster will collaborate with relevant faculty members on York’s Keele and Glendon campuses. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. All York University positions are subject to budgetary approval.

A PhD in STS, or an STS-related field, is required. Candidates' records must demonstrate excellence or promise of excellence in both research and in teaching.

The successful applicant will be based at the York Markham Campus when operational (expected in Fall 2023) and become a member of the first cohort of resident faculty members. Between July 1, 2022 and the opening of the campus, the appointee will assume teaching and research responsibilities at York’s Keele campus. The successful candidate's research will complement research clusters (namely, Public Policy, Artificial Intelligence & Society, Financial Technologies, and Digital Cultures) at York's new Markham campus, information about which can be found at https://www.yorku.ca/markham/. Endowment funding will be made available to support annual research funding, and course release, for a renewable term of five years.

York University’s Markham Campus offers state-of-the-art facilities to provide innovative job-ready academic programming and research focussing on core themes of technology and entrepreneurship as applied in different contexts, disciplines and professional fields. Building on York University’s academic presence in the City of Markham, the new campus will help fulfil future labour market and civic leadership needs by providing transferable 21st century skills that are at the core of future economic competitiveness and community development in Markham, York Region and across Ontario. Collaboration with York University’s existing research strengths in the core areas of the new campus and dynamic engagement with the area’s businesses and industries will create an innovative, cross-disciplinary research culture for solving complex problems that transcend traditional disciplines.

Applicants must have a clearly articulated program of research in science policy that focuses on biotechnology & society, artificial intelligence & society, or both. Such research may include such topics as AI and justice, biotechnology and governance, digital cultures and public policy, or other fields at the intersection of science policy, biotechnology, artificial intelligence, and society.

The successful candidate will be expected to engage in outstanding, innovative, and - as appropriate - externally funded research at the highest level. Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence or promise of research excellence as demonstrated in the research statement, publications (or forthcoming publications) with significant journals in the field, presentations at major conferences, awards and accolades, and strong recommendations from referees of high standing. As a collaborative member of the Markham Public Policy research cluster, the successful candidate is expected to develop a nationally and internationally recognized research program in Science Policy with a particular emphasis on blending scientific and technological insights with those from other relevant disciplines including law, finance, politics, and economics and with an appreciation of how such an integrated approach is essential to good policy making, whether at local, national, or international scales.

The position will involve graduate teaching and supervision, and so the successful candidate must be suitable for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies. The position will also involve undergraduate teaching not only in STS classes but also in our Department's Natural Science general education classes. Evidence of excellence, or promise of excellence, in teaching will be provided by the candidate through the teaching statement, teaching accomplishments, teaching evaluations, and strong letters of reference (requested for short-listed candidates only). Experience with education program development and pedagogical innovations in areas such as experiential education and technology enhanced learning will be an asset.
