Occupational Summary: The Director of Environmental Science and Policy at Duke Kunshan University (DKU), China leads the Environmental Research Center (ERC), and supervises the Director of Graduate Studies (DGS) to operate and grow the International Master of Environmental Policy (iMEP) graduate program. Reporting to the Dean of Graduate Studies, the Director of Environmental Science and Policy is responsible for providing strategic leadership for the relevant area to ensure the highest quality of education and research. He/she oversees the recruitment and management of world-class faculty and staff for ERC and iMEP. He/she is also responsible for growing academic and research activities related to environmental science and policy. Reports to: Dean of Graduate Studies Essential Duties: The Director of Environmental Science and Policy has several essential duties outlined as follows: Leadership and governance The Director of Environmental Science and Policy plays a leading role in developing the vision and mission of the environment area, with inputs from other relevant faculty and staff. He/she will oversee the research portfolio of ERC and iMEP being implemented at DKU. He/she will provide guidance to the DGS of iMEP on educational activities, particularly as they impact and require faculty hiring and development. He/she will, in cooperation with the Dean of Graduate Studies, provide support to the Dean of Undergraduate Studies in building connections between the undergraduate program and ERC and iMEP, involving both student learning and research, and faculty research support. His/her main duty is to take ERC and iMEP to the next level so that they are recognized globally for their high caliber research and innovative education. Faculty recruitment and development The Director of Environmental Science and Policy will oversee the DGS of iMEP in developing and implementing an annual faculty recruitment and retention plan for iMEP. He/she is expected to supervise the DGS of iMEP while the latter undertakes performance evaluations, re-appointments and promotions for all faculty and staff members in iMEP. Student recruitment and development The Director of Environmental Science and Policy must play a leadership role in growing and advancing student recruitment activities, in support of iMEP. He/she is expected to support the DGS of iMEP to develop a vibrant network of feeder schools and related channels to ensure adequate numbers of qualified iMEP applicants each year. Research support The Director of Environmental Science and Policy will lead, develop and motivate high-quality research at ERC by identifying, promoting and contributing internal and external resources. He/she will identify and support opportunities for interdisciplinary research collaboration to develop research strengths and broader research portfolio for ERC. He/she is expected to actively engage undergraduate and graduate students on research activities related to environmental sciences and policy. He/she will ensure research compliance and lab safety within ERC by implementing relevant policies and guidelines. He/she will maintain close connections with research collaborators and funding sponsors in related areas. Administrative activities The Director of Environmental Science and Policy is responsible for the development of an annual budget for ERC and will supervise the DGS of iMEP to create an annual budget plan for iMEP. He/she will oversee the effective implementation of the approved budget plan and the administration of funding for ERC and iMEP. He/she must raise external funding from domestic and international sources to support ERC and iMEP. He/she will closely work with the Nicholas School of the Environment and Sanford School of Public Policy at Duke University. Qualifications:
