Position Description:

The School of Law (LAW) and the Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences (CDS) at Boston University together seek a junior lateral or entry-level, tenure-track scholar. The focus of the search is on various aspects of accountability, transparency, fairness, and equity in algorithmic or data-driven decision systems used in judicial/law enforcement settings, with a particular interest in areas focusing on racial justice or the consideration of race in the definition and evaluation of equitable machine learning and Artificial Intelligence.

Boston University School of Law, a top-tier law school with an international reputation, is a community of leading legal scholars, teachers, students, and alumni, dedicated to providing one of the finest legal educations in the world. Since the law school opened its doors in 1872, it has admitted qualified men and women, without regard to race, sex, or religion. The breadth and depth of the law school’s curriculum, especially its clinical program, as well as its innovative spirit are distinctive in U.S. legal education.

The Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences is a transdisciplinary, degree-granting academic unit that lives outside the typical organization of a university into schools, divisions, and departments. The unit transcends all disciplines, just as its emerging field now does, and includes faculty members whose scholarly research is at the intersection of a broad range of disciplines, including, but not limited to computer science and engineering, statistics, physics, biology, theology, sociology, communications, public and global health, business, and law.

Boston University expects excellence in teaching and in research and is committed to building a culturally, racially, and ethnically diverse scholarly community, which is essential to its mission as expressed at https://www.bu.edu/info/about/diversity. BU is an AAU institution with a rich tradition of inclusion and social justice. We are proud of our record, including being the first university in the United States to award a PhD to a woman and the university from which Martin Luther King Jr. received his PhD.

We seek candidates who have a potential for high scholarly achievement, teaching excellence, and service; a demonstrated record of inclusion; and a capacity to serve as an effective mentor for students. We are eager to hear from applicants from underrepresented groups and those who support our institutional commitment to BU as an inclusive, diverse, and equitable community. A Ph.D. is not required to apply for this position. The position is envisioned to attract a J.D. degree holder, who will be jointly appointed (50-50) and considered for tenure by LAW and CDS, with the primary appointment being in the School of Law. The projected start date for the joint hire is July 1, 2022.

We are an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law. We are a VEVRAA Federal Contractor.

Applicants should send a letter of interest, a diversity statement, and a resume before December 1, 2021, to the Joint LAW-CDS Faculty Appointments Committee at Boston University School of Law, 765 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, Massachusetts 02215.
