Instructor of Physics at the Wilkes Honors College of Florida Atlantic University

The Wilkes Honors College (WHC) of Florida Atlantic University (FAU) invites applications for a full-time (9-month) Instructor of Physics position beginning Fall 2022. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses in Physics, teach and coordinate Physics labs, supervise honors theses and undergraduate research, advise undergraduate students, and provide service to the college and university. They will also have the opportunity to shape the Physics curriculum, modernize the Physics lab’s equipment, co-develop multidisciplinary courses with faculty from across the liberal arts and sciences, and demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The WHC is committed to creating an accessible, supportive environment and an educational experience that recognizes diversity and cultural competence as integral components of academic excellence. Candidates who can contribute to that goal are encouraged to apply and to identify their strengths in this area.

The WHC (www.honorscollege.edu) is a selective liberal arts and sciences college within a large state university, located on FAU’s MacArthur Campus in the coastal town of Jupiter, Florida. The campus is an international hub for scientific research and is host to the Max Planck Florida Institute, Scripps Research Institute Florida, and FAU’s own Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute. The WHC’s four-year curriculum is centered on the traditional disciplines in the liberal arts and sciences, with an emphasis on critical thinking, independent study, community-based internships, and interdisciplinary programs. The WHC is in a period of rapid growth, with 690 honors students and 42 full-time honors faculty members. FAU is among the most ethnically diverse universities in the United States, and the WHC has a diverse student body, faculty and staff. We value diversity, and are committed to advancing equity and inclusion.

The minimum qualification is a Ph.D. in Physics or a closely related field. In addition, the committee is especially interested in applicants with some or all of the following qualifications: evidence of excellence in undergraduate teaching, ability to contribute to specialized as well as core courses, experience with data acquisition and analysis, experience mentoring undergraduate research, an interest in collaborating across disciplines through research or teaching, and a demonstrated commitment to fostering diversity. This is a non-tenure track faculty rank with a career ladder. The expected teaching load is 6 courses per year. The anticipated starting date is August 8, 2022.

To receive full consideration, applicants should submit their materials by December 1, 2021. However, applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Questions about the position may be directed to the Chair of the Search Committee, Dr. Yaouen Fily, at yfily@fau.edu.

The selected applicant must provide official transcripts scanned into an electronic format. Degrees from outside the United States must be validated by an organization belonging to the National Association of Credential Evaluation Service (NACES) with an indication of the documents the evaluation was prepared from (official transcripts, diplomas, dissertation abstracts).
