The experimental particle physics group is involved in the ATLAS experiment at CERN (Switzerland) and has been involved in processing large amounts of scientific data delivered by the experiment for many years.
The position's remuneration is according to the salary scale E 13 TV-L with 66 % of the collectively agreed working hours. The appointment is for the next possible date and limited in time up to 3 years.

Professional and personal requirements for employment:
  • Completed university studies in computer science, physics or related fields (Master's degree or equivalent).
  • Experience with the Linux operating system and distributed systems
  • Good programming skills in at least one programming language, such as C++, GO, Python.

In the next phase of the experiments, data volumes will increase into the Exabyte range, requiring new concepts for processing.

Further developments of computing concepts and software for distributed computing in the context of heterogeneous computing resources (from dedicated computing clusters to HPC centers) is the goal of the BMBF collaborative project FIDIUM, within which your work will be located. Within the scope of the work there is the possibility to do a PhD.
In detail, the topics are:

  • Accouting and controlling in the context of distributed resources
  • Real-time monitoring of data storage and data flows
  • Implementation and testing of the developed components in the productive system
The development work uses existing open source software packages, either adapting them to the needs or developing them further. All work will take place within the framework of the joint project. Close cooperation with working groups at other universities and institutes is therefore a prerequisite for the success of the project.
