ABOUT RESPIRA LABS Respira Labs is on a quest to stop the progression of and ultimately prevent respiratory diseases by empowering patients, caregivers/families and clinicians with high quality and actionable home-based health information. The company was founded by Dr. Maria Artunduaga, a multi-awarded Harvard/Cal physician-scientist who decided to leave a surgical career and retrain in public health and technology after losing her grandmother to an emphysema (COPD) crisis. Backed by the NSF and NIH, she and her team have developed a patented “acoustic resonance” technology that can detect air trapping, an early and more sensitive marker of lung dysfunction. This technology has the potential to accurately diagnose and predict deterioration (exacerbations) 4+ days in advance using sensors that are low-cost and over-the-counter (10x cheaper). The team is working to bring the product to market by 2023 with leaders in respiratory medicine (CHEST), alumni from MIT & Harvard, with a trajectory on NASA Google, Intel; partnerships with El Camino Hospital/Fogarty Institute of Innovation, ResMed/Propeller and the COPD Foundation to bring the technology. Respira has raised over $2M from NSF and NIH and is preparing to raise $2M - $3M from VCs in anticipation of preclinical trials with long COVID, COPD and asthma patients (Q1 2022). In short, Respira Labs is positioning itself to become the next Dexcom for respiratory health ($43B market cap, $2B in ARR), but aiming to become a full management platform (think Livongo, IPO ROI >15x in 2019, $18.5B merger in 2020) by 2025.

As our first-ever postdoc, you will leverage your deep understanding of biomedical data science, bioinformatics, large-set data analysis, human anatomy and physiology to bridge communication between our engineering and clinical teams, and aid the development of our first product, Sylvee -- a smart wearable patch for real-time monitoring and detection of respiratory decline at home. You will help design key validation and outcomes studies, co-lead the analysis of results, and present key findings in journals and at conferences alongside the CEO. We expect the results from these projects to deepen our understanding about the role of acoustic resonance changes as a diagnostic tool of respiratory diseases, in particular COPD, COVID-19 and Asthma.

Your role at Respira Labs:

- To complete statistical analysis of emerging results from our feasibility trials;

- This should not be your first rodeo — our data are messy with many edge cases and incomplete areas that will need careful consideration. Types of data collected and ready for analysis include lung acoustic resonance, quality-of-life surveys, mobile/other vital sign analytics, activity state detection, and health records (EMR);

- To help draft scientific and medical manuscripts for publication in journals and for presentation at conferences in 2022;

- Depending on your interest, you may also help launch a follow-on study with over 200 subjects in 2022;

- To perform ongoing literature reviews to remain current with new procedures, computational tools and related research, and to propose new research directions based on the advances discussed in literature;

- To contribute to grant applications, startup competitions and investor presentations.

You'd be a good fit if you have:

- A PhD in engineering, computer science and statistics, preferably in the last 7 years;

- Ideally, domain expertise with either mobile analytics, EMRs or wearable data, though experience with some other “big data” (NGS/omics, MRI, etc) could be a suitable replacement;

- A track record of conference presentations and first author peer-reviewed publications;

- Experience with two of R, Python or Matlab and analytics packages such as SciPy/NumPy;

- Experience with Linux bash scripting is a big plus;

- Basic knowledge of code versioning tools such as Git;

- Experience with experimental design protocols;

- U.S. citizenship or hold a Green Card;

- Not completed another industrial postdoctoral fellowship within the last six months sponsored by NSF.

We want you to know:

We are committed to diversity and to building an equitable and inclusive environment for people of all backgrounds and experiences. We have already taken steps to meet that commitment (>50% of the team has a diverse background). We especially encourage members of traditionally underrepresented communities in STEM to apply, including women, people of color, first-generation college graduates, LGBTQ people, veterans, and people with disabilities.

Why Respira Labs?

- It is a mission-driven company providing an opportunity to make a significant difference for the future of respiratory health.

- You will have an opportunity to shape our company culture and our technical team working with the CEO and the advisory board.

- This is a 1-year contractor position for $65,000 to $78,000 (commensurate with geography and qualifications) and generous equity (if contract extends beyond year 1).
