The Jacobs Urban Tech Hub seeks applications from creative and dynamic researchers, thinkers, and practitioners for our next cohort of Urban Tech Fellows to support and expand the mission of the Hub.  

We seek individuals  whose professional work and research interests align with the mission of the Urban Tech Hub. Fellows will be an integral part of the ongoing work of the Hub, which includes three main areas of focus; 1) supporting a new 2 year Master of Science with a concentration in Urban Technology, 2) advancing applied urban tech research and 3) ecosystem engagement with New York City’s dynamic and growing urban tech community. 

Fellows will be expected to undertake independent research on ways that critical urban tech subjects,  such as mobility, infrastructure and/or climate change are affecting current and future cities. 

Our inaugural Senior Urban Tech Fellow, Rohit “Rit” Aggrawalla was recently appointed NYC DEP Commissioner and Chief Climate Officer for the City of New York. During his time at the Urban Tech Hub, Rit authored Rebooting NYC: An Urban Tech Agenda for NYC, a landmark research project that looked deeply at ways that new digital technologies could help optimize urban systems and expand equity through technology. 


Responsibilities/Role

As a Fellow of the Hub, selected individuals will both originate research in specific urban tech domains including mobility, infrastructure and/or climate change and work on existing Hub initiatives. Cornell Tech and the Jacobs Institute are committed to advancing applied research, especially with regard to the impacts of new digital technologies on cities. 

Fellows will also be expected to be a part of our academic community, engaging with masters students, PhD’s, Postdocs and Cornell Tech faculty. The Hub is particularly interested in Fellows with experience working in and around New York City.


Qualifications

All Applicants are expected to have a Masters Degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience in a field related to urban technology, including engineering, urban planning, transportation, computer science, etc.

We are looking for a diverse cohort at varying levels of experience, therefore there are positions available at two levels. 

Fellow - A minimum of 5 years work experience in the public or private sectors is required to apply for Urban Tech Fellow positions. 

Senior Fellow - Mid career individuals with ten or more years experience are also invited to apply as Senior Urban Tech Fellows. 

Urban Tech Fellows will be granted a one year appointment at Cornell Tech with potential for renewal. The positions are located at Cornell Tech’s campus in New York City with hybrid work arrangements, primarily in person on Roosevelt Island. 

Appointments are full or part-time paid positions as Visiting Scholars with flexibility in terms of weekly time commitment. Salaries will be commensurate with experience and benefits are available to individuals with a greater than 50% effort weekly time commitment.
