The School of Mathematics and Natural Sciences invites outstanding candidates to apply for a

Professorship in "Experimental Physics with focus on global Atmospheric Research"

(legal basis: W 3 LBesG NRW; § 36 HG NRW)

Expectations:

We are seeking an internationally recognized personality with an excellent scientific track record in Experimental Physics of the global atmosphere (free troposphere to mesosphere). Possible research areas include trace gas transport, wave dynamics, coupling processes, circulation systems or other climate-relevant processes, but are not limited to these.

Applicants should have strong expertise in the development and application of new types of measurement methods (remote sensing and / or in-situ) and the interpretation of global data sets as well as experience in the organization and implementation of measurement programs. The position announced is a core professorship in the Institute for Atmospheric and Environmental Research. Collaboration with the atmospheric chemistry group and the other research groups in the institute and in the Interdisciplinary Center for Atmosphere and Environment, as well as cooperation within the physics department are desired. In addition, the close collaboration with atmospheric research at Forschungszentrum Jülich is to be continued.

Teaching of undergraduate lectures in Experimental Physics in German as well as the development and teaching of courses in the field of Atmospheric Physics as part of the Physics degree programme is a prerequisite.

Requirements:

Besides pedagogical suitability, which has to be proven by appropriate previous experience or, in exceptional cases, demonstrated by excellent performance during the appointment procedure, the applicant is expected to have a particular aptitude for scientific work substantiated by the outstanding quality of a doctorate. Further scientific achievements must be demonstrated additionally and will be evaluated exclusively and comprehensively during the appointment procedure. The requirements for appointment to a first professorship include junior professorships, habilitations, employment as a research assistant at a university or at a non-university research institution and scientific positions in business, in administration or another social field in Germany or abroad.

  • University degree and doctorate in physics, meteorology or a closely related field
  • Outstanding track record of publications in renowned journals
  • International orientation (e.g. stays abroad, international collaborations, international lectures)
  • Acquisition, coordination, and management of larger third-party funded projects
  • Proven leadership skills in science
  • Proficiency of the German language or willingness to acquire adequate proficiency within two years

The successful candidate is expected to actively support academic self-governance at the university.
