About the Lab

Stanford University is seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Fellow (Qualitative) to join the Immigration Policy Lab (IPL) and our new Qualitative Research Initiative. IPL conducts research that employs experimental and qualitative methods to investigate the impacts of immigration and integration policies throughout the world. Within our new Qualitative Research Initiative, we are generating an exciting new mixed-methods research approach to our work that will help generate grounded hypotheses, improve policy design, and inform interpretation of quantitative results.

Using large datasets, creative mixed-methods research designs, and modern analytical tools, we bring new evidence to bear on the urgent problems practitioners face. By guiding the people who set public policy, as well as those who serve immigrant communities, our research can generate solutions and ultimately improve lives. IPL reorients academic training by placing postdocs in a hub of experiential research activity. Working side by side with faculty and professional staff, postdocs are fully immersed in an innovative research model that combines the efficiency and rigor of an academic lab with the energy and innovation of a civic-tech startup.

Position

IPL is a highly collaborative environment. The postdoc is envisioned to be a lead contributor to the overall design and execution of qualitative and mixed-methods research, conducting in-person interviewing where appropriate, on research questions related to refugee cosponsorship and immigrant health in the US. The postdoc will have the opportunity to co-author papers envisioned to appear in top journals that report on the results of the studies, as well as work with an array of affiliated faculty from top institutions, and closely with Tomás Jimenez, Jens Hainmueller, and David Laitin. While the majority of the postdoc’s time will be dedicated to collaborative lab projects, there is also an opportunity to develop related independent research. Examples of previous studies published by the lab include projects on the intergenerational impact of DACA on the mental health of children (Science), and improving refugee integration through data-driven algorithmic assignment (Science).

The initial appointment will be for one year (with potential to renew for a second year). Two postdoc roles may be filled, depending on qualifications and project fit. Start date is flexible, with an expected start date of July 2022. Salary is standardized based on Stanford University guidelines. Benefits are provided.

Qualifications

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will have completed a Ph.D., with a preference for sociology, anthropology, political science, or similar. They should have qualitative research skills, including participant observation, interviewing, coding, and analysis. Language skills in Spanish and experience working with refugee and immigrant communities in the US is valued but not necessary. In addition, experience managing large datasets and executing data analysis in complex environments is highly valued.

Stanford University is an equal opportunity employer. It welcomes nominations of, and applications from, women and members of minority groups, as well as others who would bring additional dimensions to the university’s research missions.

Application Requirements and Recommendations

Applications should include a cover letter, CV, graduate school transcripts, a writing sample, and at least two letters of recommendation. Additional papers and a Diversity Statement may be requested at a later date.

IPL encourages applicants from diverse and underrepresented groups to apply. In particular, IPL encourages individuals from historically underrepresented racial and ethnic groups (Black or African Americans, Hispanics or Latinos, American Indians or Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders, as described by the National Science Foundation), individuals with disabilities, and individuals from disadvantaged economic and educational backgrounds (low-income households and disadvantaged educational environments) to apply.

Applications will only be accepted via AcademicJobsOnline. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and we encourage applicants to apply as soon as possible. The application period will close on June 1, 2022. Applicants who have questions about the position may contact Elisa Cascardi at the Immigration Policy Lab at Stanford University, directly (cascardi@stanford.edu, Subject: Immigration Lab Postdoc (Qualitative) 2022).
