Description: The Department of Geography at The Ohio State University invites applications for a tenure-track position in Black Geographies. The position is open to all ranks. We seek a scholar whose research and teaching engage space/place in relation to issues shaping Black and Afro-diasporic lives locally, nationally, and/or internationally, and in the past, present, or future. We seek to strengthen and diversify our graduate and undergraduate curriculum in social and environmental geography and welcome potential overlap with GIS/spatial analysis and atmospheric/climate science. Area of geographic focus is open.

The successful applicant will have opportunities to teach across all levels of our curriculum, including introductory and upper-level undergraduate courses and graduate seminars, to advise undergraduate and graduate students, and to contribute to curriculum development. They will find potential collaborators and interlocutors among departmental faculty engaged in research on topics such as race, borders and migration, carceral geographies, labor, environmental and climate justice, urban geographies, transportation, health, political economy, international development, and digital justice. Depending on the nature of the candidate’s scholarship, they will have opportunities to engage with other university departments and interdisciplinary programs such as the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity, Center for Urban and Regional Analysis, Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center, Humanities Centers Consortium, Translational Data Analytics Institute, and STEAM Factory.

Qualifications: The successful applicant must have a PhD in Geography or a cognate field by the start of employment. We seek candidates whose research and teaching clearly engage Black geographies. Applicants are expected to have a viable research program and a demonstrated commitment to enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion. Experience with university teaching, mentoring members of underrepresented groups, and public-facing or community-engaged scholarship is preferred. Appointment is contingent on the university’s verification of credentials and other information required by law and/or university policies.
