The Duke Proteomics and Metabolomics Shared Resource (DPMSR) provides cutting-edge protein and metabolite characterization resources to Duke researchers. The Director of the DPMSR will be responsible for leading the DPMSR in existing capabilities and with developing new expertise and methodologies to ensure the facility continues to provide groundbreaking approaches in support of its clients. The Director will have deep expertise in the subject areas and will be capable of serving as a collaborator and/or Key Personnel on external awards as well as pursuing external funding for major instrumentation within the shared resource. The Director will also have ultimate oversight over all aspects of shared resource operations, including supervision of staff, budgets, and equipment and space details. The Director may hold a faculty appointment in a unit appropriate to their research area, and may conduct independent research in addition to providing leadership to the DPMSR, however the primary responsibilities for this position are related to the DPMSR. A minimum of 50% effort is expected to be dedicated to overseeing the DPMSR, and any effort dedicated to independent research programs should be supported by externally funded awards.

 

Responsibilities

Scientific expertise

·      Enhance nanoscale or single-cell proteomics/metabolomic service offerings

·      Bring new advances in proteomic and metabolomic data analysis

·      Develop novel approaches to data-independent acquisition (DIA)

·      Remain current with leading methodologies, analytical approaches, and technology platforms

 

Researcher support

·      Serve as technical advisor to Duke researchers

·      Support applications for external funding by advising on methodology and approach, and assist with grant-writing of applicable sections. When appropriate, serve as collaborator or Key Personnel on grant applications

·      Develop and lead courses in proteomic and metabolomic topics for the Duke research community. Partner with shared resource senior staff to offer and expand course offerings

 

Operations

·      Lead efforts to maintain cutting-edge technology at peak operations within the shared resource

·      Pursue external funding opportunities to support acquisition of new and additional major instrumentation (eg. NIH S10 and similar funding opportunities)

·      Develop and maintain relationships with vendors, local and national mass spectrometry organizations

 

Financial

·      In partnership with business unit leadership, maintain a sustainable financial model for the shared resource. Review and approve annual and incremental rate calculations, and annual budgets

·      Provide oversight of the shared resource’s move to the institutional billing software

 

 

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Ph.D. in a biomedical science-related field, plus a minimum of three years of postdoctoral training or relevant experience in mass spectrometry. 

 

Experience

This position requires extensive knowledge and experience of protein characterization techniques and analytical approaches. The preferred candidate will have a strong publication record. A candidate with an independent research program must have a demonstrated ability to maintain their own intellectually vigorous and extramurally funded research program.


Candidates must have proven leadership experience, demonstrate exceptional verbal and written communication skills, an ability to perform and prioritize multiple projects, and the ability to establish and maintain excellent working relationships with clients, staff, and administration. Previous personnel management experience is required.
