We Are:

The Fermilab Theoretical Astrophysics Department invites applications for Postdoctoral Research Associate appointments starting in the Fall of 2023. The Theoretical Astrophysics Department is part of Fermilab’s Theory Division and is deeply involved in the Fermilab Cosmic Physics Center. Theory postdocs perform self-directed theoretical research on topics of their own choosing. They are encouraged to work with members of the senior scientific staff and other postdocs. The members of the Theoretical Astrophysics Department have a wide range of interests, including theory of the early universe, large-scale structure, dark matter, dark energy, neutrino astrophysics, and numerical cosmology.

The Theoretical Astrophysics Department has strong connections with the Fermilab experimental program, which includes involvement in the Dark Energy Survey, the South Pole Telescope, CMB-S4, the Rubin Observatory, the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument, several direct dark matter detection experiments (SENSEI, SuperCDMS, ADMX, LZ, OSCURA), neutrino experiments including MicroBoone, SBNF, Icarus, and DUNE, and the Large Hadron collider CMS experiment through the LHC Physics Center. Members of the Theoretical Astrophysics Department can be involved in any of these efforts, as well as in the development of future projects.

The staff members of the astrophysics department include Joshua Frieman, Nick Gnedin, Craig Hogan, Dan Hooper, Gordan Krnjaic and Albert Stebbins. There is also strong synergy with staff members of the experimental cosmic program, that includes Jim Annis, Dan Bauer, Bradford Benson, Liz Buckley-Geer, Aaron Chou, Mike Crisler, Tom Diehl, Juan Estrada, Brenna Flaugher, Gaston Gutierrez, Lauren Hsu and Steve Kent, Dan Baxter as well as with the staff members of the particle physics group that includes John Campbell, Marcela Carena, Bogdan Dobrescu, Patrick Fox, Walter Giele, Roni Harnik, Christopher Hill, Stefan Hoeche, Andreas Kronfeld, Pedro Machado, Stephen Parke, Noemi Rocco, Michael Wagman, Asher Berlin and Ruth Van de Water.

Postdoctoral research associates in the Fermilab Theory Division are appointed for three years. Outstanding candidates can be considered for a 5-year David N. Schramm Fellowship in the Theoretical Astrophysics Department.

We Are Looking For:
  • Candidates should have obtained a Ph.D. in astrophysics or theoretical particle physics or a closely related field, or expect to earn a Ph.D. in the same fields, by September 1, 2023.
  • Demonstrated experience in theoretical particle-physics research.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Respect, understand, and value individual differences that embody the principles of diversity.
  • Abide by all environment, safety, and health regulations.
