The Film and Media Studies (FMST) program at Colgate University invites applications for a tenure-stream position in Media and Race at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning fall semester 2023. Completion of PhD or MFA is required prior to or shortly after the date of hire. We seek applications from candidates whose scholarship focuses on media production by marginalized racial and ethnic groups and/or representations of such identities in contemporary and historical media. We welcome candidates whose scholarship incorporates media production, including visual, sonic, digital, and/or performance-based work. The FMST program is dedicated to addressing long histories of inequity in media production and representation, as well as histories of resistance. Therefore, we are especially interested in teacher-scholars whose work intersects with issues of power, privilege, and social justice. The teaching load is five courses per academic year, including our required introductory course and specialized courses focused on media, race, and social justice. Ongoing contributions to the program’s longstanding tradition of bringing a diverse group of film, video, and media makers and scholars to campus will be integral to the position. All Colgate faculty contribute to university-wide academic programs, such as the Liberal Arts Core Curriculum.

The successful candidate will play a key role in Colgate’s Middle Campus Initiative for Arts, Creativity, and Innovation. The Benton Center, the inaugural project of this exciting initiative will be the new home of the FMST program and faculty. More information on this initiative and the Benton complex can be found here.

Further information about the FMST program can be found here.

To apply, please submit a cover letter, CV, and names of three recommenders through https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/22617. Candidates should describe in their cover letter how their teaching and scholarship meaningfully engage with values and issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion, providing concrete examples and/or strategies for working effectively with students across a wide range of identities and backgrounds. Review of applications will begin on September 26, 2022 and continue until the position is filled.
