The Art and Art History Department at Macalester College invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Sculpture and 3D Design to begin in Fall 2023. Course load is five courses per year, including Sculpture I, Sculpture II, 3-D Design and additional topics courses aligned with the candidate’s interests. Additional teaching responsibilities include teaching the First Year Course and the Senior Studio Seminar, in rotation with other faculty. Ability to integrate writing into a studio curriculum is a plus. The Studio Art program is integrated with an active Art History program in a liberal arts undergraduate college. 

Candidates should be well-versed in both traditional sculptural practices (including wood, metal, or stone processes), and expanded forms of installation, which may include digital technologies, and/or performance. An MFA, active exhibition record, and college teaching experience are required. The Department welcomes candidates with contemporary approaches to the study of studio art, and knowledge of diverse practices of visual culture. Strong candidates will have a record of experience or demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring diverse student populations. Candidates should be ready to work effectively with colleagues in the Art and Art History Department, and to pursue engagement across the Macalester community through service, curricular affinities, and collaborative projects.

  • Experience teaching undergraduate students; 
  • Experience using inclusive pedagogy, active and innovative teaching strategies, and assessment of learning outcomes as applicable; 
5. A one-page Artist Statement; 
6. Provide three names and contact information for references; 
7. A PDF or link to an electronic portfolio of 15-20 images of candidate’s original artwork.
