We are seeking a motivated individual who has a strong research background in plant molecular biology and genetics to characterize and edit apple genes of great horticultural and economic importance.

Major responsibilities will include:

1) Conducting experiments to characterize apple genes, such as genetic marker analysis, gene expression, gene subcellular localization, protein-protein and protein-DNA interactions, promoter assays, and others; 2) Working closely with an apple transformation specialist to design and construct CRISPR/CAS constructs to edit apple genes. 3) Quantifying apple tree growth and fruit quality in greenhouse and/or orchard; 4) Analyzing data and drafting manuscript for peer-reviewed publications; 5) Supervising seasonal undergraduate researchers.

The position is available immediately. The initial appointment of the position will be for one year and renewable depending on performance and funding.

Anticipated Division of Time:

In accordance with the five responsibilities listed above, the successful candidate is expected to devote his/her time as follows: • Responsibility 1): 40% • Responsibility 2): 10% • Responsibility 3): 5% • Responsibility 4): 40% • Responsibility 5): 5%

Requirements:

Ph.D. in plant biology, genetics, or related field. Research experience in model plant systems is desirable. Must be able to work independently, devise appropriate hypotheses and experiments, and learn new skills as appropriate. Strong writing and communication skills are favored. Preference will be given to those already showing outstanding leadership, demonstrated maturity, and organizational skills.

Pay Ranges:

The hiring rate of pay for the successful candidate will be determined considering the following criteria:

  • Prior relevant work or industry experience.
  • Education level to the extent education is relevant to the position.
  • Academic Discipline (faculty pay ranges reflects 9-month annual salary)
  • Unique applicable skills.
