POSITION SUMMARY The CCQ invites applications for one or more Associate Research Scientist positions. Particular consideration will be given to applicants with a strong background and research agenda in computational approaches to the correlated electron problem including dynamics and nonequilibrium physics. In exceptional circumstances appointment at the Research Scientist level may be considered. Directed by Antoine Georges and co-directed by Andrew Millis, the Center for Computational Quantum Physics (CCQ) is a leading international center for the study of equilibrium and non-equilibrium many-body quantum systems, with applications to condensed matter physics, materials science, chemistry and related fields. The development of the concepts, algorithms and code libraries needed to advance the field is fundamental to the work of the center. Research projects currently pursued at CCQ cover a broad range of methods and interest, see: https://www.simonsfoundation.org/flatiron/center-for-computational-quantum- physics/ CCQ currently comprises more than 40 scientists at various career stages from recent Ph.Ds. through senior scientists, also including data scientists, support staff and scientific visitors, and is planning to grow to 50+. The institute has vigorous visitor and workshop programs and strong interactions with scientists from neighboring institutions. Associate Research Scientists/Research Scientists at CCQ are researchers who develop theoretical concepts, algorithms and codes, and apply these to obtain new insights into the quantum-mechanical behavior of materials and molecules. Associate Research Scientists develop their own research programs and also work in collaboration with CCQ senior research scientists as well as postdoctoral fellows. Reporting to research scientists, the director or co-director of CCQ, these positions are based at the Simons Foundation in New York City. Associate Research Scientists are typically appointed for an initial three-year period; the appointment may be renewed for up to another three years. Research Scientists positions are not term-limited. Associate Research Scientists may be reviewed for promotion to a non-term-limited position as a research scientist. Hiring will occur at either level depending on the academic seniority of the applicant. Review of applications will begin on or about Nov 15, 2022 ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES • Conduct research and/or develop and implement novel algorithms and codes relevant to CCQ research directions • Publish research in refereed scientific and technical journals and present research at scientific conferences • Provide publicly available software for use by the scientific community • Support the public use of available software • Assist in the organization of CCQ-related workshops, conferences and group seminars • Supervise research conducted by Flatiron research fellows and graduate and undergraduate students from neighboring institutions • Mentor summer students and assist in the organization of summer programs • Perform other duties or tasks as assigned or required MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education • Ph.D. in a related field Related Skills & Other Requirements • Postgraduate research experience (typically 2 to 6 years for ARS positions) in quantum many-body theory, condensed matter physics, theoretical chemistry, materials science or another field of interest to the CCQ. • A record of excellence in scientific publication • Ability to do original and outstanding research in physics • Effective oral and written communication skills • Ability to work independently as well as in a collaborative team environment Other Desired Qualifications • Expertise in computational electronic structure methods and many body physics; software and algorithm development. • Expertise in machine learning approaches to quantum systems Required Application Materials • CV • Research statement outlining both past research accomplishments and a vision for scientific research at the CCQ • Three (3) letters of recommendation submitted confidentially by the letter writers to ccqjobs@simonsfoundation.org THE SIMONS FOUNDATION'S DIVERSITY COMMITMENT Many of the greatest ideas and discoveries come from a diverse mix of minds, backgrounds and experiences, and we are committed to cultivating an inclusive work environment.
