The Wilkes Honors College of Florida Atlantic University (FAU) invites applications for a full-time (9-month) renewable Instructor position in Neuroscience, beginning Fall 2023. Instructors are members of the faculty assembly and eligible for promotion based on teaching performance. A research program is not required but there will be opportunities to work with advanced undergraduate students on research projects and many students co-author work in peer-reviewed journals. In addition, instructors are eligible to receive resources for professional development. The Wilkes Honors College is committed to creating an accessible, supportive environment and an educational experience that recognizes diversity and cultural competence as integral components of academic excellence. Candidates who can contribute to that goal are encouraged to apply and to identify their strengths in this area. The successful candidate will teach introductory and advanced undergraduate courses and labs in behavioral neuroscience and cellular neuroscience, advise students, and direct honors theses. Average teaching load is seven courses per year plus thesis supervision.

The Wilkes Honors College (WHC), which opened in 1999, is a highly selective liberal arts and sciences college within a large state university, located on FAU’s MacArthur Campus in the coastal town of Jupiter, Florida, just outside of West Palm Beach. The campus is an international hub for scientific research and hosts the world-renowned research institutes Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience and UF Scripps Biomedical Research, and FAU’s own Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute. In addition, FAU’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute is located nearby in Fort Pierce.

The WHC’s four-year curriculum is centered on the traditional disciplines in the liberal arts and sciences, with an emphasis on critical thinking, independent study, community-based internships, and cross-disciplinary programs. Currently, the WHC enrolls 649 honors students and has 47 full-time honors faculty members. As part of the University’s ambitious strategic plan, the WHC will increase the size of its student body and grow its faculty over the next five years. See www.honorscollege.edu.

Required qualifications include a PhD or MD/PhD in Neuroscience, Psychology, Biology, Vertebrate Zoology, or a related field. The committee will view favorably evidence of excellence in undergraduate teaching, breadth and depth of teaching interests, potential for collaboration in interdisciplinary teaching activities for our talented, motivated, and diverse student body, experience in advising and mentoring undergraduate students, and fosters and creates educational opportunities where all student populations thrive.

The Wilkes Honors College is a community of excellence, equity, and diversity and welcomes applications from women, underrepresented minorities, persons with disabilities, sexual minority groups, and other candidates who will contribute to the diversification and enrichment of ideas and perspectives.
