The Ohio State University seeks a creative practitioner/educator with skills in Black popular music creation, performance, and production, and knowledge of the music industry for a joint appointment in the School of Music and the Department of African American and African Studies. Anticipated start date is August 15, 2023. Focusing on hip hop and related music's, this artist would establish Black popular music's as integral and highly visible aspects of creative activity on our campus and in the Columbus arts scene.

Responsibilities will include teaching/developing undergraduate and graduate courses in popular music creation and production, and the practical and technical skills of music making, including but not limited to songwriting and beatmaking. Additional responsibilities will include teaching a course on the historical, social, and political importance of this music, and/or other areas consistent with the candidate’s expertise. The successful candidate will engage in leadership and mentorship of undergraduate and graduate students studying popular music's and promote collaborations and outreach with artistic and scholarly stakeholders within and outside the university; and maintain a creative/scholarly agenda commensurate with expectations of a research extensive university.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated a firm commitment to the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Experience with research, educational, and community engagement programs that meet the needs of minoritized or underserved populations is desirable. A commitment to music both within and outside the Western canon is expected.

This position is in The Ohio State University’s Race, Inclusion and Social Equity (RAISE) initiative. Through the RAISE initiative, Ohio State is enhancing our world-class research program on race, inclusion, and social equity. Over the next decade, the university will add at least 50 tenure-track faculty members to existing scholars whose research can help to narrow social disparities in educational attainment, health outcomes, rates of incarceration, political representation, environmental impacts, and economic well-being. Adding scholars in focused areas will enhance the University’s outstanding faculty and inform solutions to intractable issues. RAISE is part of Ohio State’s larger initiative to expand the size and impact of Ohio State’s faculty over the coming decade, while also enhancing academic and personal resources to support Ohio State scholars, educators, and practitioners through all phases of their careers. Qualifications: ● MFA or PhD in Music or a related field or possession of equivalent experience; ● Record/potential for teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in popular musics; ● An established record of creative achievement at the professional and/or university settings; ● Potential to develop successful collaborations with other academic units, community partners, and professional organizations. Promise of or a record of community engagement, or interdisciplinary activities is preferred; ● Evidence of a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and demonstrated ability to cultivate positive relationships with diverse students, colleagues, staff, and stakeholders.
