The Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics at Florida State University invites applications for a nine-month tenure-track (open rank) position in modern/contemporary Japanese visual culture and media studies, beginning August 2023. Applicants must have a PhD from an accredited institution in Japanese, East Asian Studies, Comparative Literature, or a related field. Preference will be given to candidates who can offer courses on subjects including (but not limited to) Japanese and East Asian film, text and image relations, translation, new media, and popular culture. The candidate will teach two courses per semester, one of which may be a Japanese language class or language-based content class. The candidate must have prior experience teaching Japanese language, or texts in the original language. The successful candidate must demonstrate scholarly excellence, a commitment to undergraduate and graduate teaching and mentorship, and strong leadership skills. Specifically, the candidate will be expected to take on a leading role in the East Asian Languages and Cultures program at FSU, and to participate in the intellectual life of a department that brings together faculty from multiple languages and disciplines.
