The Department of Physics at Carnegie Mellon University invites applications for a postdoctoral position in quantum condensed matter theory. The successful candidate will conduct theoretical research at the interface of quantum materials, quantum field theory and quantum information science. Current topics of interest include (i) strong electronic correlation effects in lower-dimensional materials (such as moire graphene), including unconventional superconductivity and frustrated magnetism, (ii) simulation of quantum many-body phases, both numerically via tensor-network based approaches and experimental collaborations on neutral atom platforms, and (iii) diagnosing correlated phases of matter via quantum sensing techniques. The successful candidate will work primarily with Prof. Shubhayu Chatterjee, but is highly encouraged to collaborate with the condensed matter groups at CMU, and with the broader community at the Pittsburgh Quantum Institute.

The position will offer a competitive compensation and a generous annual research/travel budget. The initial appointment will be for two years, with a possibility of renewal for a third year contingent on availability of funding.

We seek excellence within a respectful, inclusive University context. Carnegie Mellon University is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. We are committed to increasing the diversity of our community on a range of intellectual and cultural dimensions. CMU's Department of Physics welcomes applicants who will enhance this diversity through their research, teaching and service.

Qualifications

The starting date is flexible. The anticipated start date is Fall 2023, though earlier or later start dates can be accommodated. Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in Physics by the time of appointment.

Application Instructions

Applications must apply via Interfolio, and include a curriculum vitae, publication list, a statement of research interests. Either the statement of research interests or an (optional) cover letter should identify the applicant’s scientific connection to or interest in the topic of this postdoctoral position. In addition, candidates should arrange for three letters of recommendation to be uploaded (a prompt will be sent automatically to the applicant’s references when their contact information is entered into Interfolio). For full consideration, all materials should be received by January 15, 2023, but applications will be considered until the position is filled. For questions about the position, please contact Prof. Shubhayu Chatterjee at shubhayuchatterjee@cmu.edu.
