The School of Interactive Arts and Technology (SIAT), located in beautiful greater Vancouver, seeks applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Thinking With Data. We seek candidates whose research focuses on human-centred computational approaches to data and analytics to support data-enabled thinking. The applicant’s research should be positioned in the fields of visualization and/or data science that are transformative to how humans interact with information in an increasingly complex world. We are particularly interested in candidates who develop, explore and apply innovations in visualization and visual analytics, data cognition, visual language, societal data, data media, and/or human-data interaction. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in Computer Science or a related discipline with a computing-intensive research and teaching focus that encompasses both theory and practice. Teaching experience and student mentorship will be considered an asset. Ph.D. candidates with solid indication of imminent completion may be hired at the rank of Instructor and will be promoted to the rank of Assistant Professor upon completion of the Ph.D.

The successful candidate will:
  • Develop and maintain an active research program, including the application for research funding to support collaborative research and graduate student assistants, and the mobilization of that practice or research as appropriate.
  • Teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate level and develop new pedagogical approaches that support our process of making meaningful structural revisions to our program
  • Join colleagues in service to the school, faculty, and university governance, culture, and community building.
Challenges across society demand new tools and new practices for human sensemaking and/or decision-making with data that draw from diverse disciplinary perspectives. SIAT is a vibrant, interdisciplinary and internationally recognized research-intensive school that brings together human-centred computing, design and media in a fertile collaborative environment, ideally suited to foster education and research across traditional boundaries. Our faculty members are unique in their disciplinary diversity and we value the intersection of trans-disciplinary knowledge creation. We offer degrees at the bachelor's, master's and doctoral levels. The School currently enrols about 800 undergraduates and 110 Ph.D. and Masters graduates with women well represented in both the faculty and student bodies. SIAT is committed to fostering a diverse, equitable and inclusive community that advances safe, sustainable and humane working practices within communities and personal research and teaching practices. SlAT's infrastructure includes innovative and collaborative teaching and research facilities situated on Simon Fraser University's award-winning distinctive Surrey urban campus.

SIAT is a member of the Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology (FCAT) at SFU. For the past seventeen years, SFU has been voted the top comprehensive university in Canada, and in 2020, was included in the top 20 most innovative universities in the world for social, economic and environmental impact. The Vancouver area is becoming a leader in the international tech sector with rapidly growing employment and innovation opportunities from startups to global players. Occupying the traditional territories of the Squamish (Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw), Musqueam (xʷməθkʷəy̓əm), Tsleil-Waututh (səlil̓ w̓ətaʔɬ), Katzie, and Kwikwetlem (kʷikʷəƛ̓əm) peoples, the region’s rich cultural, natural and intellectual resources make it one of the world’s most desirable places to live and work.

Simon Fraser University is an institution whose strength is based on our shared commitments to diversity, equity and inclusion. Diversity is an underlying principle of our Strategic Vision, which pledges SFU to “foster a culture of inclusion and mutual respect, celebrating the diversity reflected among its students, faculty, staff and our community.” SFU is committed to ensuring no individual is denied access to employment opportunities for reasons unrelated to ability or qualifications. Consistent with this principle, SFU will advance the interests of underrepresented members of the work force, including Indigenous peoples, persons with disabilities, racialized persons and women; embrace gender and sexual diversity; ensure that equal opportunity is afforded to all who seek employment at the University; and treat all employees equitably. Candidates that belong to underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged to apply. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be given priority.

Reviewing of applicants will commence on February 15th 2023 and will continue until the position is filled. The successful applicant will begin on July 15th 2023 or later.
