The Christensen Family Center for Innovation (CFCI) at Duke’s Pratt School of Engineering provides the resources and environment to help empower communities of innovation. With a foundation in design, we empower technology innovators to address authentic needs and create value for the innovator, their customers, and society. We offer access to methodologies, experiences, coaching, and experts to help founders reach their full potential or transition into technology-enabled products. CFCI seeks a Managing Director to help establish and grow this exciting new part of Duke. The CFCI is immersed in Duke’s talented and diverse students, faculty, and staff driving technology innovation. In this role, the Managing Director will lead the development and execution of strategy and vision for furthering the Christensen Family Center for Innovation’s position as a leading center for research and education. They will be responsible for the central coordination of all functions and activities of the center. Working with the Executive Director, they will provide leadership and direction for program development, partnership management, and center operations. The Managing Director will provide strategic and timely advice and guidance to ensure the overall management of the center, including representing the center in internal and external interactions with staff, committees, government, corporate, and community leaders. The Managing Director oversees day-to-day operations, ensuring efficiency and effectiveness in optimizing available resources. Establish milestones, measurements, and manage ongoing projects to ensure that all are effectively moving forward. Join this fascinating intersection of technology, startups, and talent.

Serve as a senior leader in forming policies and best practices that guide the work of CFCI. Identify funding opportunities to support educational programs, research initiatives, educational opportunities, and program success. Manage and determine fiscal requirements, budgetary recommendations, and expense reconciliation. 

Foster strategic internal and external partnerships, including students, deans, directors, department heads, faculty, administrators, staff, parents, and alums. Establish partnerships with governmental, for-profit, and non-profit organizations and Durham community members.   

Serve as a resource, instructor, and consultant to faculty, staff, and students. Represent the center on campus-wide committees and initiatives. 

Provide leadership for staff recruitment, hiring, continuous learning, supervision, retention, and evaluation.

Collaborate with senior leaders, schools, and endeavors to advocate and connect departments across the university to develop research, resources, and technology solutions, focussing on the center’s mission of realizing innovation with technology enablement.

Track and report metrics against key objectives set for the center. Collaborate and cultivate relationships with comparable universities to explore best practices for program development and opportunities for partnerships across the universities. 

The Managing Director will also take an active role in creating and launching a technical product management program within CFCI. Responsibilities include:

  • Developing technology tools that support best practices for innovation pedagogy, needs finding, and product evaluation.

  • Explore new partnerships and revenue opportunities to fund center product development operations. 

  • Create programs, educational opportunities, and resources for technology product management. Increase awareness, experience, and skills needed for successful careers in technology products.

  • Connecting with the industry community around best practices and paths to product management careers

This position requires a minimum of 8 years of operational leadership (or equivalent) and experience with technical product development.
