*** this position has been closed and new applications are no longer accepted. ***

The University of Notre Dame High Energy Physics Group has an immediate opening for two Postdoctoral research associates to work on the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider.

The group is looking for energetic applicants who are enthusiastic about learning new skills. Applicants should have, or be about to obtain, a Ph.D. in Experimental Particle Physics. The successful candidate is expected to play an important role in the analysis of CMS data and make significant contributions to either the tracker and track trigger upgrades or computing activities. Candidates with knowledge of or an interest in learning more about online or realtime software, digital electronics, machine learning, GPU programming, the scientific python software ecosystem, or high performance analysis software are especially encouraged to apply. Review of applications will begin on March 13, and continue until the positions are filled. For inquiries, please contact Profs. Marc Osherson (mosherso@nd.edu) or Kevin Lannon (klannon@nd.edu).

The CMS group at Notre Dame (Hildreth, Jessop, Lannon, Osherson, Wayne) oversees the development of the online software for the Tracker Data Processing Systems (DPS) and contributes to the development of the Level 1 track trigger. The group also leads in several areas of CMS software and computing, including developing the software for central management of CMS data processing and data transfers, and R&D into new computing approaches for large scale data processing and columnar data analysis. Activities in both of these areas also includes collaboration with faculty and researchers from Notre Dame’s Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) department and Notre Dame’s Center for Research Computing (CRC). Notre Dame has also played a leading role in the construction, commissioning and operation of the CMS hadron calorimeter, and the electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) and has extensive roles high level trigger (HLT) operations. The group is also actively engaged in developing and coordinating other detector upgrade projects for the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), including the ECAL/HCAL, and MIP timing detector (MTD). Group members have leadership roles in CMS physics analyses with interests in top physics (including searches for new physics using effective field theory (EFT) techniques), searches for exotic particles decaying through boosted topologies, Higgs coupling measurements (ttH and anomalous Higgs decays), SUSY searches, and electroweak physics. Our postdocs have historically taken CMS leadership roles in these efforts.

Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, a list of publications to which they have made significant contributions, a description of research interests and skills, and arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent via Academic Jobs Online.
