Harvey Mudd College is a highly selective liberal arts college of science, engineering, and mathematics. It is located in Claremont, CA, approximately 35 miles east of Los Angeles, at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains. The college enrolls about 900 students, nearly all living on campus, and is a member of the Claremont Colleges, which comprises five undergraduate colleges, the Claremont Graduate University and the Keck Graduate Institute of Applied Life Sciences.

The Computer Science Department currently has sixteen tenure-track faculty members and anticipates searching for additional tenure-track faculty during the 2022-23 academic year with an anticipated start date of Fall 2024. Currently, it serves three major programs—the computer science major, the joint major in computer science and mathematics, and the joint major in mathematical and computational biology—totaling more than 120 students in each graduating class. By Fall 2024, the department expects to serve two additional major programs—a new joint major in computer science and physics and a new joint climate and computer science major.

Among the department’s strengths are its success in recruiting women (who comprise about half of both our faculty and our majors) to computer science, an innovative and rigorous curriculum that prepares students for both employment and graduate school, and an active research program that involves a substantial number of undergraduates. The teaching load is two courses per semester, plus supervision of one or two industry-supported senior capstone Computer Science Clinic projects per year. (Please visit www.cs.hmc.edu for more information about the department and the Clinic program.)

Harvey Mudd College is committed to broadening participation in STEM fields. Therefore, among the criteria for appointment are experience with students from diverse backgrounds and/or the ability to teach those students effectively.

The department will begin accepting applications via the AcademicJobsOnline system immediately. Candidates should submit: (1) a cover letter describing their interests in teaching undergraduates at Harvey Mudd College in particular and promoting inclusion and diversity in computer science, and (2) a curriculum vitae. Candidates may optionally submit: (3) a statement regarding teaching philosophy as well as teaching evaluations or other evidence of teaching effectiveness, (4) a statement of research interests and how undergraduates could participate in this work, (5) a statement regarding diversity and inclusion as well as experience or other evidence of commitment to diversity and inclusion, and (6) video or other examples of teaching practices.

Candidates are asked to provide at least two references, with an optional third. Any letter writers indicated in the application will automatically receive a request to upload their letters. At least one letter should address the candidate’s potential as a teacher.
