Occupational Summary

The Samuel DuBois Cook Center on Social Equity at Duke University is seeking a postdoctoral associate in economics or business to conduct independent research activities under the guidance of William Darity, director of the Samuel DuBois Cook Center on Social Equity and Professor of Economics and Public Policy in preparation for a full time academic or research career.   The postdoc will collaborate with the Cook Center working group on social mobility and the newly established survey unit This is a two-year appointment, with the potential for an additional one-year renewal.

The broad goal of the National Asset Scorecard on Communities of Color (NASCC) 2023 project is to better understand the impact of COVID-19 on small businesses and historically marginalized communities.  We want to gather data on how business owners have coped with its deleterious economic effects. The Cook Center will assess the impact of the pandemic on resources and well-being, on small business owners’ access to and utilization of federal emergency support, and other strategies and actions taken by the public and private sectors to assist small business owners cope with the crisis. Our objective is to collect data to include information regarding employees of these small businesses. This process also will include analysis of the support from the federal government, from state and local governments and any subsequent aid provided to address their needs. Specifically, the project will address: (a) how are black business owners and their employees have managed under the present economic shocks; (b) government responses through legislative action; (c) strategies put forth by the private sector in support of small businesses; (d) the consequences on surrounding communities and ripple effects throughout the local economy; and, last, (e) potential policy recommendations for both short and long-term consideration. There are five cities identified for investigation: a reexamination of Washington, DC, Houston, Texas, Charlotte, North Carolina, Durham, North Carolina and Atlanta, Georgia

Work Performed

Work with the research team of the National Asset Scorecard on Communities of Color (NASCC) project to analyze wealth positions at the intersection of race, ethnicity, gender and other variables.  The NASCC survey was developed to supplement existing national datasets that collect information on household wealth in the United States but rarely collect data that is disaggregated by specific national origin. The NASCC survey data help provide a greater understanding of the economic well-being of people of color in targeted cities across the United States.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Ph.D. in economics, business or closely related field

Advanced knowledge of research and statistical methodologies, including population-based survey research design and methods.

Proficiency in R, SAS, or STATA or related programs.

Experience working across a diverse range of social science projects focused on inequality.

Solid knowledge of theoretical frameworks related to social inequalities.

Excellent analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills.

Ability to work independently and as a member of a multidisciplinary team.

Preferred Qualifications

Record of publications in peer review journals

Experience performing multilevel modeling, structural equation modeling, longitudinal data analysis, endogeneity and instrumental variable estimation.
