Preventive and Behavioral Medicine Faculty 
Associate or Full Professor, Tenure-Track 

The Division of Preventive and Behavioral Medicine in the Department of Population and Quantitative Health Sciences (PQHS) at the University of Massachusetts Chan (UMass Chan) Medical School in Worcester, MA, is recruiting a tenure-track faculty member at the Associate Professor to Full Professor level. 

Candidates who hold doctoral degrees in fields such as public health, epidemiology, psychology, nutrition, exercise science, nursing and medicine are eligible. We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in areas addressing health equity and interest in community engaged research. Research should address common causes of preventable morbidity and mortality in the United States including due to cancer and cardiovascular disease, such as physical activity, food security and nutrition, tobacco, substance abuse, vaccination, and chronic disease prevention and management. We are especially eager to consider applicants who will support and elevate the UMass Chan commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, and foster an environment of inclusive collaborative excellence where all faculty can thrive. Successful candidates will have demonstrated success in developing a federally funded program of research and have a substantive publication record. They will be expected to develop and maintain a highly innovative, independent program of research. 

Candidates will have ample opportunities for collaboration, as well as doctoral-level teaching and mentoring. Successful candidates will also receive structured mentorship and sponsorship through a career advancement program that will empower their scientific and professional development as well as facilitate their social and cultural integration into our larger UMass Chan scientific community. 

The Division of Preventive and Behavioral Medicine (PBM) is a multi-disciplinary group dedicated to improving clinical and public health practice and policy through innovative and sustainable education, research, and service in preventive, behavioral and mind-body medicine. PBM has a 40-year history of leading cutting edge research addressing health promotion and disease prevention. PBM is home to the CDC-funded Prevention Research Center at UMass Chan Medical School and the Center for Tobacco Treatment, Research and Training. 

PQHS currently has over 40 primary faculty members distributed across 4 Divisions: Preventive and Behavioral Medicine; Biostatistics and Health Services Research; Epidemiology; and Health Informatics and Implementation Science. PQHS also hosts a doctoral program in Clinical and Population Health Research and a methods consulting and service unit, the Quantitative Methods Core. PQHS faculty are Principal Investigators on extramural grants totaling over $20 million.

The area boasts numerous restaurants, theater groups and concert venues, and a variety of affordable housing options from newly renovated condominiums to gracious Victorian homes. Worcester’s central location provides easy access to the major travel hubs of Boston and Providence, as well as a large variety of opportunities for outdoor activities including beaches, lakes, farms, and mountains. The newly constructed Polar Park is home to the Woo Sox, the minor league AAA partner to the Red Sox in Boston, supporting a revitalization of the city that has resulted in new jobs, breweries, restaurants, and rapid growth in real estate.

  2. An anonymized research plan (max 3 pages) that emphasizes the applicant’s vision and plan for their independent research as well as the applicant’s most significant accomplishments.*

  4. A one-page cover letter with a description of the applicant’s research areas and how their planned research program fits within PBM’s areas of interest.

The second stage will be a full review of all materials submitted.
