The Medical Director will serve as the chief medical advisor to the Commissioner of the MA Department of Developmental Services (DDS).

The Medical Director will have accountability for development and implementation of clinical policies and guidelines and will lead clinical components of various initiatives. The Medical Director will conduct clinical consultations related to people served by DDS, consult to DDS service providers and is responsible for providing clinical expertise to DDS programs.

The Medical Director will have a dual reporting relationship, reporting directly to both the Commissioner of DDS and the Director of the Center for Developmental Disabilities Evaluation and Research (CDDER) at the Eunice Kennedy Shriver Center at UMass Chan Medical School. This position may be full or part-time - if the ratio is no less than 80% Medical Director/20% Clinical Practice or Instruction if 100% Medical Director is not an option. At UMass Chan Medical School, the position will be a member of the faculty of Family Medicine and Community Health at a level commensurate with experience (Assistant Professor or above).

The Medical Director will: • Provide consultation on complex medical cases, high risk situations, and complex medication management (e.g., area and regional nurses, clinical consultations, etc.). • Provide strategic direction, advise, and consult other clinicians within the agency. Provide clinical support and expertise to DDS program and clinical staff, including clinical components of ongoing investigations. • Lead planning and implementation of clinical components of systemic improvements, and longer-term initiatives to improve access to and quality of clinical care for people served by DDS. • Manage the development of clinically-related guidelines, policies, protocols, guidance and educational materials designed to improve the healthcare delivered to people served by DDS. • Collect and analyze data and prepare written reports as necessary to inform DDS policy-making as it relates to health care services provided to DDS population. • Provide guidance and recommendations on emerging medical-related topics, such as continued guidance on all COVID-related medical issues. • Provide clinical consultation to CDDER on relevant initiatives under development for DDS. • Contribute to interdisciplinary clinical consultations and mortality reviews. • Perform liaison activities with other agencies under the Massachusetts Executive Office of Health and Human Services, including MassHealth, and external groups and associations on clinical policy priorities. • Develop relationships, communication, and educational programming with health care providers and health care institutions state-wide. • Consider and include internal stakeholders from across the enterprise when planning and making decisions in which they have an interest. • Engage in periodic teaching activities of medical and graduate nursing students on caring for people with developmental disabilities. • Keep abreast of and ensures compliance with State and federal and healthcare regulations. • Perform other similar and related duties as required or as directed. The Medical Director will be expected to: • Actively implement strategies that routinely deliver results. Manage and resolves conflicts and disagreements in a constructive manner. • Respect and adhere to ethical principles and confidentiality regarding any sensitive information or documents used as a part of professional activity.

REQUIRED EDUCATION Medical Doctor or Doctor of Osteopathy.

Actively licensed to practice medicine without restriction in Massachusetts throughout employment with UMass Chan Medical School. Candidates with current licensure in another state and the ability to obtain Massachusetts licensure within 6 months will be considered

REQUIRED WORK EXPERIENCE Board certified in internal or family medicine and minimum 7 years of experience in direct patient care

PREFERRED WORK EXPERIENCE Strong administrative background, with successful management and leadership experience.

Demonstrated a commitment to teamwork and team development.

Experience working successfully with culturally diverse populations.

Experienced with quality improvement work.

Advanced training or graduate degree in management, public policy, public health or business administration desirable.

Experience in public policy and/or public administration or healthcare management.

Experience with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, and acquired brain injuries is particularly desirable.
