The Johnson Lab at Duke University seeks applicants for a full-time postdoctoral researcher for a multiscale marine microalgae cultivation project funded by the Department of Energy and located at the Duke Marine Laboratory. The researcher will primarily be responsible for testing, evaluating and interpreting data from alternative cultivation strategies and designs from small scale (~1 L) laboratory experiments to full scale (>5000 L) field trials as well as proposing and evaluating improved strategies and designs. The project will involve interacting with and coordinating efforts from a small team (up to ~4 members) of experienced technicians and be based at the marine algae cultivation facility located in Beaufort, North Carolina. Specifically, the researcher will lead and coordinate the setup, operation, monitoring and troubleshooting of photosynthetic bioreactors and raceway ponds using seawater and operating continuously 7-days a week during experimentation phases. The applicant should have experience in large scale microalgae cultivation or similar aquaculture applications as well as have basic laboratory skills and the ability to troubleshoot and work independently. The applicant must be able to lift at least 50 lbs and sometimes work outdoors under a variety of sometimes challenging environmental conditions (e.g. heat, rain, wind, etc.). In addition to the above responsibilities, the researcher will assist with the supervision of students helping with the operation of the facility and interact with other researchers and investigators. The position will require periodic reporting (oral and written), data analysis using a variety of software platforms (R, Matlab, Excel, other), public engagement including using online tools, preparation and editing of manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication and other duties as the project matures. The position will offer numerous opportunities for professional development and growth through group and university resources.

Candidate must have laboratory experience in algae growth and analysis such as dry weight, ash content, chlorophyll, lipids, protein, or optical based techniques.

Other responsibilities may include general lab upkeep, dishwashing or other cleaning/maintenance associated with normal operations, sample preparation or other tasks as assigned.

Attention to detail and standard operating procedures/protocols and compliance with safety requirements are essential.

Prepare and deliver updates on data and performance at weekly staff meetings and via written and oral reports to larger audiences.

Candidate must be able to work flexible hours, including some evenings, early mornings or weekends as required by the experiment.

Thrive as a team member in a complex environment composed of researchers, students (undergraduate and graduate), staff and other visiting members. Assist others in their project roles, and to direct others in helping achieve goals associated with this position. Attend classes, meetings and training sessions offered by Duke that will enhance the skills and knowledge necessary to be successful and perform as expected for the position. Perform other tasks and special projects as assigned.

The position is affiliated with the Marine Microbe Group (https://sites.nicholas.duke.edu/johnson/), which is based at the Duke Marine Laboratory (http://nicholas.duke.edu/marinelab/) in Beaufort NC, and part of a broader marine scientific community with state-of-the-art analytical and algae growth resources, as well as many professional development opportunities. This is an initial one year appointment, with the possibility of extension based on progress and availability of funds. We expect to the position to start in May/June 2023. Applications should include (1) a cover letter indicating interest, commitment, qualifications and provide contact information for three references (2) resume. Application review will begin starting March 31, and continue until the position is filled. Salary commensurate with education and experience and based on the NIH postdoctoral pay scale (https://www.niaid.nih.gov/grants-contracts/salary-cap-stipends).
