Occupational Summary The Kenan Institute for Ethics is Duke’s oldest signature interdisciplinary institute. From its founding in 1995, it has had a three-part charge: to draw widely on Duke’s faculty and its research to educate Duke students in ethical matters; to engage the intellectual resources of the University in pressing ethical issues as they come to life outside the University in the array of institutions that contribute to the wellbeing of society; to build bridges between the first charge and the second by developing models of research and pedagogy that connect classrooms to communities. To draw these three charges together, the Institute is launching a new initiative focused on digital media, with an emphasis on the production of audio documentaries and podcasts.

The Institute is seeking a senior producer to direct this effort. The work will require extensive experience in audio storytelling and in the production of audio documentaries and podcasts. The person in the position will be expected to develop, produce, and host a podcast series that highlights and complements Institute programming, as well as to develop and produce occasional single episode, short- and long-form audio documentaries. This work will be done in close collaboration with the Institute director and the assistant director for communications as part of the Institute’s overall communication strategy. The position may involve teaching courses in audio documentary and will require mentoring students and consulting with faculty who are interested in podcasts and audio storytelling. The person will report to the director, serve on the Institute’s leadership team, and supervise independent contractors and students involved in the audio production process.

Work Performed • Produce and serve as host of a signature podcast series • Produce single-episode audio documentaries • Identify promising storylines, characters, and sound-rich tape opportunities • Craft compelling narratives that align with Institute programming • Serve as a first-line story editor, refining scripts through restructuring and rewriting • Conduct research, reporting, and interviews • Oversee audio production: recording, script editing, audio mixing, project managing, and creative problem-solving • Oversee postproduction, from tape selects to musical scoring • Use social media (Twitter etc.) to market podcasts and documentaries, building and growing an audience for Institute programming • Teach and mentor Duke students in audio production • Provide consultation to faculty and staff developing podcasts and other audio production

Required Education and Qualifications: • BA Required • At least ten years of intensive audio production experience in radio, podcasting, or equivalent, • preferably in both a journalistic and academic environment • Excellent writing skills, editing ability, and command of storytelling • Experience turning research into compelling narratives • Mastery of professional audio editing software, especially Pro Tools and Hindenburg.
