The University of Calgary (UCalgary), located in the heart of Southern Alberta, both acknowledges and pays tribute to the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty 7, which include the Blackfoot Confederacy (comprised of the Siksika, the Piikani, and the Kainai First Nations) as well as the Tsuut’ina First Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda (including Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Goodstoney First Nations). The university recognizes that the City of Calgary is also home to Region III of the Métis Nation of Alberta. By virtue of the signing of Treaty 7 in 1877, the university recognizes that we are all treaty people. The City of Calgary is home to diverse communities. Together, we share this land, strive to live together, learn together, walk together, and grow together “in a good way.”

The University of Calgary recognizes the importance of creating and maintaining a welcoming and equitable environment that enables every member of our campus to thrive. The Inclusive Excellence Cluster Hiring Initiative has been launched to advance and embed the institution’s commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility, Indigenous engagement, and inclusive excellence. This initiative, which was developed in accordance with Section 10.1 of the Alberta Human Rights Act, is a key step to ameliorate the under-representation of members of equity deserving groups at the university, to build a critical mass of scholars who reflect the diversity of our student body and the broader community, to advance epistemic pluralism and the creation of new knowledges and ways of knowing, and to broaden the culture of inclusivity and engagement. As part of the Inclusive Excellence Cluster Hiring initiative, the Cumming School of Medicine is inviting applications from qualified individuals for three tenure-track positions at the rank of Assistant Professor. These positions are only open to qualified Black (e.g., Black Pioneer, African, Caribbean) scholars. This is an open-disciplinary search, and this competition will be for scholars working in all pillars of health-related research and those with a focus on education and education scholarship. The anticipated start date is July 2023, or a mutually agreed upon date. A commitment to recruiting, retaining, promoting and providing leadership opportunities for an increasingly diverse group of excellent scholars is key to our mission of building a culture of equity, diversity, inclusion and wellness. This will also advance our social accountability mandate.

Black scholars will be welcomed into the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary. The University is committed to racial equity and is a signatory of the Scarborough Charter, which affirms actions to foster Black flourishing and a commitment to developing anti-Black racism policy and to promotion Black inclusion. In 2020, the Cumming School introduced a Black applicant admission policy led by the Black Medical Students Association and Black faculty.

Clinician-scientists and educators are eligible to apply and will align with the appropriate clinical Departments and Alberta Health Services for their patient-oriented work where that is applicable.

Qualifications include an MD and/or PhD, or equivalent, by the time of faculty appointment. Those who have an MD and/or PhD and do not currently hold a faculty appointment are encouraged to apply. Strong preference will be given to scholars working in areas that align with the strategic plan of the Cumming School of Medicine and University of Calgary (https://cumming.ucalgary.ca/about/faculty-and-staff/strategic-plan-2015-2020 and https://www.ucalgary.ca/eyeshigh/strategy). This will focus on scholars working in the area of precision health which is conceptualized as the deep knowledge of individuals and/or populations by integrating biomedical and social determinants of health. This includes fundamental science, with data that includes imaging, molecular analyses as well as those dealing with social, economic and health system determinants of health and/or clinical outcomes. In order to build a cohort of individuals to advance our equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility (EDIA) mission, academics with an interest in participation, mentoring, teaching and leading in EDIA activities will be highly sought after. If the successful candidate is a practicing physician, eligibility for regular or special licensure in the Province of Alberta is required.
