Assistant Professor of Arabic

Position Summary

The successful candidate will be expected to share a deep commitment to effective instruction at the undergraduate and graduate levels and to the mentoring of students in their professional development.  Successful candidates will be expected to broaden participation among members of under-represented groups; demonstrate through their activities the richness of diversity in the learning experience; integrate multicultural experiences into instructional methods and research tools; contribute to the development of pedagogical techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests.

Open Field in Arabic Literature.  The successful candidate will be expected to teach general education and advanced level Arabic Studies courses and will lead our efforts in developing and promoting a minor in Arabic and Islamic Studies. The teaching load is four courses per year (2-2).

Minimum Qualifications

Earned Ph.D. in Arabic Studies or related field in hand by May 30, 2017; primary specialization in classical Arabic literature with ability to teach a broader chronological spectrum of Arabic texts through the contemporary period; native or near native fluency in Arabic; a proven record of excellence in teaching; demonstrated potential in establishing a successful research and scholarship, and a deep commitment to promoting diversity through academic and research programs. Equivalent foreign degrees are acceptable.

Preferred Qualifications

Research and/or teaching interests in any of the following areas: Maghrebi and/or Mediterranean Studies; Judeo-Arabic culture and literature; classical antiquity and Arabic thought; medieval to early modern Arabic historiography.

Appointment Terms

This is a full-time, 9-month, tenure track position with an anticipated start date of August 23, 2017. The successful candidate’s academic appointment will be at the Storrs campus. Faculty may also be asked to teach at one of UConn’s regional campuses as part of their ordinary workload. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
