The University of Connecticut (UConn) is entering a transformational period of growth supported by the $1.7B Next Generation Connecticut ( and the $1B Bioscience Connecticut ( investments and a bold new Academic Plan: Path to Excellence (  As part of these initiatives, UConn has hired more than 450 new faculty at all ranks during the past three years.  We are pleased to continue these investments by inviting applications for faculty positions in the Department of Allied Health Sciences in the College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor (60 percent research/40 percent teaching) with growing expertise in Health Promotion and Genomics research. The targeted candidate’s thematic area of research will include, but is not limited to: genes-environment-behavioral interactions; population genomics of human disease, nutrition and obesity genetics and genomics; use of GWAS and other methods for genomic/epigenomic biomarker discovery projects and genetic counseling.

The Department of Allied Health Sciences ( offers: an undergraduate major in Allied Health with multiple concentrations, including Public Health and Health Promotion and Occupational and Environmental Health and Safety; three nationally-accredited health programs (Dietetics, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Diagnostic Genetic Sciences); 2 masters programs (Health Promotion Sciences, Health Care Genetics) with 1 in development (Genetic Counseling); a number of certificate programs; and PhD program in Health Promotion Sciences.  The University and College have strong support for research, including through faculty hiring initiatives and multiple centers with interest in genomics including the Institute for Systems Genomics (, Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine (, and strong external partnerships. 

The successful candidate will join a vibrant, interdisciplinary faculty dedicated to advancing knowledge through interdisciplinary research, teaching and community service. This is a 9-month, tenure track position with a start date of August 23, 2017 that will support the department’s mission to be a national and international leader in health promotion science, education and research.  The successful candidate’s primary academic appointment will be at the Storrs campus.  Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The successful candidate is expected to establish a competitive, extramurally-funded research program, to contribute to scholarship through high quality publications and to achieve national recognition as through invited presentations and honorific awards. In the area of teaching, the successful candidate will share a deep commitment to effective instruction at the undergraduate and graduate levels, development of innovative courses and mentoring of students in research, outreach and professional development.  Successful candidates will also be expected to broaden participation among members of under-represented groups; demonstrate through their research, teaching, and/or public engagement the richness of diversity in the learning experience; integrate multicultural experiences into instructional methods and research tools; leadership in developing pedagogical techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests.

Minimum Qualifications

Earned doctorate (PhD, MD or equivalent); substantial postdoctoral experience or equivalent in an area relevant to health promotion and genomics; and teaching experience at the university level.  Candidates must have excellent skills in oral and written communication, and interpersonal relationships. Candidates must have a history of working in multidisciplinary teams. For consideration at the Associate Professor level, a proven track record of being an independent investigator and being successful securing of extramural funding as PI or Co-PI is required, as well as a strong publication history.

Preferred Qualifications

Clinical certification (e.g. ABMG, ACMG, ASCP, CGC) and/or health credential, evidence of successful translation of genome based knowledge for diagnosis, intervention strategies or improvement of human health or disease; a record of garnering extramural research support. 

Appointment Terms
