Open-Rank Faculty (Assistant/Associate/Full Professor) – Biomedical Informatics

The Department of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics (B&B) at Duke University is conducting a search for candidates for open-rank faculty positions in Biomedical Informatics. B&B is an integral component of one of the nation’s foremost medical research enterprises. The department currently has approximately 50 faculty members and, as a department within the Duke School of Medicine (SOM), collaborates closely with clinical, basic science, and translational investigators within the SOM and across Duke. The mission of the department is to promote the development and sound application of novel methods for complex problems and to educate tomorrow’s leaders in the areas of biostatistics, computational biology, and biomedical informatics. In this regard, the department offers four educational programs, including both master’s- and PhD-level curricula.

The successful candidate(s) will contribute expertise along with a growing community of Duke faculty and staff who work at the interface of biomedical data and research. Opportunities for collaboration on a number of large initiatives, both federally and industry supported, are excellent. The ideal candidate(s) will have expertise and a demonstrated research track record commensurate with rank in one or more of the following areas: natural language processing; development and application of machine learning techniques, including deep learning; mobile applications; data visualization; electronic health records; distributed data processes; integration of data from multiple sources; design and implementation of data standards and ontologies.

Working closely with biomedical colleagues at Duke and elsewhere, the candidate will:

   • Create innovative approaches for more efficient or effective means of accessing, integrating, or using data.

   • Lead the scientific development of novel informatics tools and methodologies.

   • Develop strategies for designing and implementing studies to evaluate these developments.

   • Disseminate the information on these approaches through presentations at major meetings and publications in prominent biomedical journals.

   • Take a primary role in applications for external funding, either as a Principal Investigator or as a co-Investigator.

   • Interface with other biomedical experts from the Duke Department of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics, the Duke Schools of Medicine and Nursing, Duke University Health System and external public and private entities.

   • Contribute substantively to our educational programs through teaching and mentorship.

   • A PhD or equivalent degree in biomedical informatics, biostatistics, computer science, or a related field.

   • Ability to partner with other biomedical researchers to initiate interdisciplinary research projects.

   • Demonstrated expertise in biomedical research.

   • Experience or knowledge in relevant software/programming.

   • Highly self-motivated individual, enthusiastic about scientific discovery.
