Structural Materials and Mechanics Post-Docs at InSitu/CHESS

The InSitu center at Cornell High-Energy Synchrotron Source CHESS (InSitu@CHESS) has openings for post-doctoral research associates to study the properties and performance of structural materials using high energy x-ray diffraction (HEXD) and micromechanical numerical simulations. InSitu is the center for Integrated Simulation and X-ray Interrogation Tools and training for micromechanics at CHESS in Ithaca, New York, USA. The program provides assistance to visiting user groups, with emphasis on industrial users. The successful candidate will pursue a personal research program developing next generation HEXD experiments, X-ray data processing algorithms, or advanced material models, in addition to collaborating with user groups in support of the InSitu program. We seek candidates with experience in HEXD, characterization of structural materials using other probes, and/or developing micromechanical simulation codes. A Ph.D. in mechanical/structural engineering or materials science with an emphasis on mechanics or materials characterization is preferred; a Ph.D. in other relevant physical sciences will also be considered. A solid publication record, fluency in the English language, and excellent communication skills are essential. This is a yearly appointment, but will be renewed annually based on satisfactory performance and availability of funds.

Located on an Ivy League university campus in picturesque upstate New York, CHESS serves a world-wide user base of materials scientists, structural biologists, chemists, physicists, and engineers. It is a National Science Foundation-supported National User Facility dedicated to novel studies of materials using x-ray technology and has a strong service and team-oriented environment. Cornell has received numerous awards (http://hr.cornell.edu/awards.html) for supporting employees and their families. The InSitu center (http://insitu.chess.cornell.edu), funded by the Office of Naval Research, resides at CHESS and has the mission of enabling the use of HEXD experiments on important applications by providing enhanced user support to industrial users.

Applications should be submitted at https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/8994 and should include a cover letter, a CV, a list of publications, a detailed summary of research experience and interests. Applicants must arrange to have at least three letters of recommendation uploaded, as per instructions on the academicjobsonline website. For information about the position, contact Dr. Matthew Miller at mpm4@cornell.edu or Dr. Darren Pagan at dcp99@cornell.edu. The starting date is negotiable.
