Research Director Duke-Margolis Health Policy Center

Reporting to the Margolis Center Director, the Research Director is responsible for leading projects related to evidence based healthcare delivery and payment reform and policy analysis. This role interacts regularly with external project sponsors and collaborators, including government agencies, academic, advocacy, and health care organizations. He/she collaborates with senior center leadership and manages the day-to-day implementation of multiple projects to ensure the successful execution of the project objectives, and the production of high-quality research materials and convening activities. This position is based in Durham, NC but would require travel to Washington, DC to coordinate with Margolis Center faculty and staff.

% of Time Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

50% Content, Strategy and Research Leadership of Healthcare Delivery and Payment Reform Portfolio: • Oversight, direction, and mentorship of operational team • Collaboration with Leadership of End-of-Life Program • Oversight of Arnold Foundation Grant - Wrap up successful stage 1 and prep for a major grant opportunity • Collaborates with faculty and staff to develop concepts, priorities, and strategies to meet research and project needs • Collaborates with the COO and senior staff to develop project direction and focus, project priorities, and manages their execution • Interacts with external collaborators, including government agencies, research and/or policy organizations. • Identifying and pursuing opportunities for collaboration and funding, including developing and maintaining relationships with funders and creating funding proposals. • Monitors developments of significance to his/her projects in the government, press, biomedical literature, and key external organizations. • Provides content leadership and direct the staff in drafting and tracking the substantive content components of project deliverables. • Utilizes research and writing skills to create project materials including research papers, policy analyses and event related materials. • Strategic relationship management 50% Lead Study Group on North Carolina Health Transformation • Convene small group of experts and stakeholders around payment and delivery reform in the context of Medicaid.

Special Education/Experience Requirements:


• Advances degree(s) required. MD, PhD, MBA, MPH, MPP, MPA or other applicable degrees desired • Minimum 8 years of experience with at least 4 years in a position of comparable experience and responsibility • Proven ability to plan and organize content with attention to detail and creativity • Ability to interact and manage relationships with high level individuals and organizations • Proven ability to write business documents and plans • Professional and assertive with a positive approach to working in a team environment • Flexibility to work in the evenings, early mornings and on weekends, if required • Work experience in fast-paced office setting, preferably in a government, non-profit, or policy/political organization

Special Knowledge/Skills Requirements:

• Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office (i.e. MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access) • Strong organization, high initiative, strong interpersonal skills, discretion, poise, mature judgment • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment • Significant reputation in policy circles
