ORGANIZATION OR DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION:

The Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care (TLCPC) is the largest clinical palliative care program in Canada. We now have the full continuum of palliative care service delivery within the Sinai Health System (i.e. home, acute care, ambulatory and palliative care unit). Academically, the Centre is a member of the University of Toronto’s Division of Palliative Care within the Department of Family and Community Medicine. We provide quality palliative care to patients suffering from a life-threatening illness and their families. Our mission is to have patients and families experience seamless care. Our clinical, research and education programs support this goal.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The TLCPC is recruiting a scientist to join our research team. This position is geared to an early to mid-career scientist with experience in clinical, health services or social sciences research. The successful candidate will play a critical role in a community-focused clinical and research program that strives to be a leader in innovative practice tools and models of collaborative care. In addition, we are working on research in the implementation of the new legislation on medically assisted dying, goals of care communication, and advancing clinical knowledge in palliative care.

The Scientist’s role is to establish a creative, independent, externally-funded program of research aligned with the goals of the centre and to contribute to building the research program at the Latner Centre. The role also includes collaborating on projects within the centre. There are many opportunities to collaborate beyond the centre. With the recent integration of Sinai, Bridgepoint Health, and Circle of Care, there is potential to create a critical mass of researchers, in partnership with the Bridgepoint Collaboratory, who all share an interest in the management of complexity. The scientist will have the opportunity to be appointed at the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute, cross-appointed to the Global Institute of Psychosocial, Palliative and End-of-Life Care (GIPPEC), as well as at the University of Toronto Division of Palliative Care and at the relevant University of Toronto Faculty or School.

Previous experience in the context of Palliative Care or primary care is preferred but not required. The Scientist will have a thorough knowledge base in epidemiology and a strong interest in and knowledge of qualitative research. Integrity, excellent interpersonal skills and a willingness to collaborate are requisite qualities. Because a majority of the centre’s projects are in applied research, confidence conducting research in clinical settings, as well as excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.

Minimum Education • Successful completion of PhD in clinical, social sciences or health services research. Minimum Experience

• This position is ideally suited for a recent PhD graduate, someone currently engaged in a post-doctoral fellowship, or a junior to mid-career scientist interested in pursuing a career in Palliative Care research. o Thorough knowledge base in epidemiology and a strong interest in and knowledge of qualitative research. o Understanding of research ethics. o Ability to write original and competitive grant applications o Experience in implementing research projects, knowledge of appropriate procedures for data collection and data management. o Ability to engage in knowledge translation activities, such as oral presentations, preparing manuscripts for publication, and engaging stakeholders and policy-makers. o Understanding research budget management.
