Thompson Writing Program Lecturer in International Writing

The Thompson Writing Program at Duke University invites applications for a regular rank, non-tenure track position at the lecturer level to begin July 1, 2017. Appointment is for an initial three years, with possible renewal after successful review and contingent upon continued program needs. Salary is competitive with a strong benefits package, and with opportunities for professional development.

Faculty will teach writing seminars at Duke Kunshan University (DKU) in Kunshan, China and in the Duke University Thompson Writing Program (TWP) in Durham, North Carolina. During one semester each academic year, faculty will be charged with designing and teaching an innovative upper-division writing seminar at DKU called Writing Across Cultures, which facilitates an exploration of writing in international contexts. During the alternate semester each academic year, faculty will design and teach an innovative theme-based first-year course at Duke University’s Durham campus called Academic Writing, which introduces students to university-level writing.

PhD is required (any field) and a demonstrated commitment to undergraduate teaching. Experience working with international students and/or ESL students is a plus. Lecturers will draw on their disciplinary training and interests to design both Writing across Cultures and the Academic Writing Seminar. Teaching load is five (5) total courses per academic year: two (2) sections of Writing across Cultures in DKU and three (3) sections of Academic Writing at Duke’s Durham campus. Sections of both courses are limited to 12 students.
