The Cornell Center for Materials Research (CCMR) Shared Facilities are dedicated to the microstructural analysis andcharacterization of metallic, ceramic, and polymeric materials, and support hundreds of campus researchers each year and external researchers from industry/academia. The basic function of this position is to oversee, maintain, and develop CCMR Materials Facilities that host a broad suite of surface analysis, thin film deposition, and materials characterization, including electron microscopy, optical spectroscopy, electric and magnetic characterization, x-ray diffraction/crystallography, thermal treatment and sample preparation equipment that enable and support research.

In particular, the responsibilities of the Facility Manager are to:

1. Manage the day-to-day operation of vibrant research facility. Maintain instruments to specifications.

2. Supervise facility technical staff.

3. Train researchers on safe and proper use of facility equipment.

4. Establish and maintain sound safety practices in compliance with applicable regulations.

5. Coordinate and provide expert technical input to the annual update of the Facilities three-year strategic plans in collaboration with the Facility Advisor(s) and the Facility Director.

6. Implement these plans through preparation and submission of capital equipment proposals, acquisition and installation of new instrumentation.

7. Remain current on research that utilizes techniques provided by the facility.

8. Maintain facility records as required by the Center Financial Administration.

9. Perform analyses for off-campus users and compile research summary reports.

Required qualifications: PhD in Materials Science, a physical science, engineering, or similar discipline, or equivalent. 3 – 5 years’ experience with surface analysis techniques, e.g., X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, scanned probe microscopy, electric and magnetic device characterization. Applicants must possess a strong work ethic and self-motivation. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential. Experience managing, mentoring, and developing multiple personnel. Excellent computer skills and experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint.
