Director of Research Development (Research Scientist or Associate in Research) Nicholas School of the Environment

The Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke University invites applications for a full time academic staff position, Director of Research Development, based in Durham, NC. The director will assist the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Initiatives by coordinating and developing individual and complex research grant applications, delivery of grant writing and proposal-development training, and pre-submission critical reviews of research grants. The incumbent will develop and teach workshops and trainings for faculty and students.

Specific Duties Include: Support the development of complex funding proposals through effective interactions with faculty by providing scientific proposal management, proposal editing and/or writing integration service, program development, and support. Provide training to students and faculty on research proposal writing.

Coordinate the research grant proposal process, working with individuals at various levels in the organization to ensure successful integration of all parts and full compliance with all funding solicitation and sponsor requirements. Assist with inception of program ideas, and coordinate with faculty and grant managers and development staff on preparing and submitting proposals for funding.

Edit proposals and write or provide writing support for proposals; provide comprehensive editorial review; advise investigators on proposal content and organization; for proposals not funded, support post-processing or reviews and revision for resubmission as appropriate; assist with updates and maintenance of institutional resource template materials.

Design and deliver training to better prepare faculty and doctoral students to develop grant proposals and lead complex research projects.

Establish goals and evaluate outcomes for all programs and initiatives; prepare reports and regularly share performance metrics with school leadership.

Other duties as assigned by the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Initiatives.

Requirements: Preferred candidates will have a doctoral degree in environmental sciences, physical sciences, biomedical/health sciences or social sciences/humanities. A master’s degree in one of these fields is a minimum degree requirement. Individual qualifications, academic excellence, collegiality, and adding a dimension of diversity to our faculty and staff, rather than specific research area will be the primary criteria in selecting the successful candidate.

Demonstration of an understanding and familiarity with a broad range of science or technical subject matter. 

Minimum of 3 years of experience working with faculty in an academic or research setting, including a track record of effective communication, and demonstrated familiarity with all aspects of extramural grants and/or contracts.

Experience teaching or leading trainings or workshops.

Must be a collaborative team player.
