The Department of Music at Duke University, located in Durham, North Carolina, invites applications for a full-time faculty position in cello and cellist with the Ciompi Quartet, Ensemble-in-Residence at Duke University, to begin August 1, 2018.



                        Assistant / Associate / Full Professor of the Practice of Music, non-tenure-track

                        Cellist of the Ciompi Quartet of Duke University.



                          Perform with the Ciompi Quartet in regular on-campus appearances and in its national and international concerts; teach undergraduate cello and chamber music; engage in the activities and responsibilities of regular rank faculty in the Department of Music; participate actively in the profession.



                          Candidates should have an established career as a chamber musician and possess an extensive knowledge of the string quartet repertoire, with the clear potential to contribute to the professional advancement of the Ciompi Quartet. Individual accomplishments should demonstrate consistent and creative pursuit of excellence as a performer. The candidate should be a resourceful teacher who can work with students at a variety of levels. The ability to collaborate effectively will be especially important. 


The search committee seeks a cellist whose primary interest is in string quartet performance, with additional substantive interests such as (but not limited to) contemporary and electronic music performance, composition, improvisation, historical performance, imaginative pedagogy, and public engagement and outreach.


Duties are divided between the Ciompi Quartet (half-time) and applied teaching and related activities (half-time). This is a non-tenure-track position with renewable appointment. Rank will be determined by the candidate’s experience and current academic appointment.


The Ciompi Quartet was founded in 1965 by the renowned Italian violinist, Giorgio Ciompi. It performs repertoire from all periods, including dozens of pieces it has commissioned and premiered. It is committed to maintaining a vigorous presence in the University and beyond.
