The Mehta research group at Cornell University seek two post-doctoral scholars with an interest in developing cutting-edge technologies to address problems in Global Health and experience with biomolecular assays and microfluidic device development. The position is available immediately and requires a 2-year commitment.

The project will focus on the development of assays for smartphone-based analysis of micronutrient, infectious disease, food safety, and immunological biomarkers in humans as well as in other materials such as diet, working in collaboration with an interdisciplinary team of biomedical engineers, computer scientists, nutritionists, physicians, public health practitioners, entrepreneurs and information scientists.  The project will also involve field validation and testing of the technology at our clinical sites in India, Kenya, and Ecuador.

The candidate will have the opportunity to take a leadership role in a growing global and mobile health initiative.  Additional opportunities for research and training in the areas of global health and for entrepreneurship may also be possible, depending on the candidate’s interest.

Required qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Nutrition (with expertise in biomolecular and nutritional assays) or Engineering (with expertise in immunoassays, working with cell culture and biological samples, biomolecular diagnostic devices) or Immunology or Food Safety with relevant expertise – Proof that all Ph.D. requirements have been fulfilled before the start date is required.

Required Competencies:

  • Proficiency in biomolecular assays and techniques, including protein binding assays, lateral flow immunoassays, bacterial and mammalian cell culture, and running commercial ELISA kits. An ideal candidate would have hands-on experience with cell culture, lateral flow assay development for biomarkers for infectious diseases and assessment of nutritional status. Mobile app development, database knowledge and image processing software skills are a plus.
  • Project planning and co-ordination problem-solving, scientific grant writing and oral presentation skills.
  • Ability to work as a member of an interdisciplinary team and under pressure to meet deadlines;
  • Ability to lead and organize teams comprised of graduate and undergraduate students
