Position Description: |
The Faculty of Computing and Data Sciences (CDS) at Boston University is seeking applicants for a 2-year postdoctoral research position for large scale environmental data modeling. Reliable rainfall predictions have the potential to improve the livelihood and the resilience to weather extremes of millions of people in Africa and other developing countries. However our ability to do these predictions remains poor in many parts of Africa. The goal of this research is to explore the potential of machine learning and statistics to leverage data (remote sensing data and ground weather sensor data), and theory (partial differential equations) for improved rainfall prediction in West Africa. The position will be under the supervision of Dr. Yves Atchade. QualificationsA Phd degree in the fields of Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Earth and atmospheric sciences or related fields. Strong data modeling skills with a rigorous technical training in machine learning and statistics. Strong programming skills in Python and Matlab, with a background in processing very large data sets. Familiarity with remote sensing data is an advantage. Excellent communication skills, with a track record of writing scientific papers.
To apply: submit a cover letter, a CV, one-page research statement, and three references to atchade@bu.edu. Please note all newly hired staff and faculty will need to be in compliance with Boston University’s COVID-19 Vaccination and Booster Requirement within 30 days of date of hire.
