Extension Associate in Community IPM

The New York State Integrated Pest Management program (NYSIPM) is looking for a Community Integrated Pest Management Associate, with expertise in applied entomology, pest or wildlife management, and/or turfgrass management, to support statewide community pest management programs and to develop an outstanding extension and applied research program in community settings. A portion of time will also be allocated to extension responsibilities that support urban agricultural activities.

NYSIPM is a nationally recognized leader in the development and promotion of IPM practices. The mission of NYSIPM is to develop sustainable ways to manage pests and help people adopt methods that minimize environmental, human health, and economic risks. Although NYSIPM has traditionally been separated into Agricultural and Community programs, there is an increasing need for overlap between the two areas of focus.  Community IPM refers to the management of insects and other arthropods, weeds, plant diseases, invasive species, wildlife, and public health pests in settings that are non-agricultural, including lawns, gardens, landscapes, golf courses, parks, schools, hospitals, and homes and other buildings. However, many community IPM pests are problematic in and around farms.

The NYSIPM programs is seeking an individual, to be located in the Western New York region, who will develop and implement extension and research programming on community pests and pest management.

The Community IPM Extension Associate will serve as a leader in the Western New York region and as part of a statewide team to conduct outreach to diverse urban, suburban, rural and agricultural audiences. Responsibilities include conducting in-person education, training and consultations, developing an applied research program and other regular extension duties in Western NY and statewide as needed.

Position Requirements:

EDUCATION

Required: Masters or Ph.D. from an accredited institution with a major in Integrated Pest Management, Entomology, Wildlife Ecology and Management, Horticulture, Public Health Pest Management, or a closely associated field.

Desired: Course work in entomology, wildlife ecology and management, horticulture, plant pathology, economics, adult education, and communication and/or social marketing.

EXPERIENCE

Desired: Two to three years of familiarity with cooperative extension and the implementation of urban/structural pest management, wildlife damage control and/or turf and landscape pest management. Experience in the use of major social media platforms for the communication of science and/or promotion of behavior change. Practice in various forms of education (e.g., live presentations and workshops, webinars, hosting events, video creation, writing for a non-scientific audiences). Experience working with diverse audiences. Experience conducting and analyzing applied research projects and ability to relate in community settings.  A bilingual candidate in English and Spanish is desirable.

Anticipated division of time:

Program Development and Implementation (60%)

This position provides leadership for planning, conducting, and evaluating a comprehensive educational outreach program, including applied research and demonstrations, in integrated pest management. Audiences can include the commercial pest management, nuisance wildlife management and/or turf and landscape industries, school and municipal facilities managers, communities in general and residents of New York State.

The Extension Associate will develop and implement a statewide educational program for community IPM in various settings with potential focus in one or more relevant settings. Other duties and efforts will address priority issues in community IPM, including structural, public health and invasive species pests. The Extension Associate will:

  • Provide leadership for planning, implementing and evaluating educational programs that address general public, municipal, institutional and practitioner identified needs and opportunities.
  • Lead and coordinate community IPM extension and training activities to help end users implement IPM in home, school, park, structural, landscape and other settings. 
  • Support and collaborate with urban agricultural IPM efforts in Western NY and statewide.
  • Individually and collaboratively explore and pursue new and additional funding sources to enhance and extend extension and research program opportunities. 
  • Develop educational materials to promote the adoption of IPM, such as manuals, fact sheets, websites, mobile applications, videos, social media posts, etc. 
  • Plan and conduct demonstrations of integrated pest management for the community settings chosen.
  • Ensure a major program emphasis on the demonstration and adoption of IPM principles and practices. Provide leadership, technical guidance and educational support in community IPM for NYSIPM staff and on- and off-campus Cooperative Extension staff. 
  • Consult with advisory committees, extension educators, faculty, urban growers, private consultants, and industry personnel to assess their needs and discuss methods to best implement IPM in the chosen settings. 
  • Initiate IPM collaborative projects with Cornell faculty and staff and other off-campus extension educators, private industry operators, and staff from other governmental and non-governmental agencies and organizations. 
  • Evaluate program for outcomes and demonstrate measurable impact. 
  • Participate in university, regional, state, or national partner committees.

Applied Research (20%)

  • Initiate and conduct appropriate applied research projects with both regional and statewide implications dealing with integrated pest management approaches to major pest problems. While flexible, areas of focus should include housing or structural pests, turfgrass, nuisance wildlife or urban agriculture.

Program Evaluation (10%)

  • Evaluate, document and report the impact of IPM projects, programs and practices. 
  • Identify and report IPM knowledge gaps and information transfer problems. 
  • Share results in quarterly and annual reports to the IPM Program and federal and state agencies, and at appropriate local, state, regional, and national meetings.

Professional Development (5%)

  • Participate in professional development opportunities, conferences and workshops appropriate to program and personal skill enhancement. This includes opportunities for professional development in the areas of equity and inclusion offered through NYS IPM, CCE, CALS, and Cornell University. 
  • Participate in related regional, statewide, and national professional organizations as appropriate.

Key Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required to Perform the Work of this Position

  • Knowledge of philosophy, principles, and practice of integrated pest management; urban entomology, wildlife ecology and management, or other non-agricultural pest management.
  • Demonstrated ability to initiate, plan, conduct and evaluate informal adult education programs; teach diverse adult audiences; define, conduct, and interpret applied research/demonstration projects; lead and effectively participate in professional team efforts; utilize electronic technology in daily work effort; relate effectively, equitably, and inclusively to co‑workers, advisors, community and professional leaders, and targeted audiences; communicate effectively through verbal, written, and visual channels to diverse audiences; recruit, train, and supervise temporary staff; recruit, train, motivate, and reward volunteers; engage in relationship- building and collaboration, and support efforts to build diverse, equitable and inclusive Integrated Pest Management programs.

This is a full-time (40 hours/week). This position will be housed in Rochester, NY, in the Cornell Cooperative Extension, Monroe County office. This is non-tenure track position covering with an initial three (3) year appointment. Reappointment is contingent upon available resources and successful performance.
