Position Description

Biomedical Engineering Associate in Research

We are seeking exceptional candidates for a full-time position as an Associate in Research to design and perform experiments as we develop a wound-healing biomaterial in skin graft reconstruction, and immunologic studies of tolerance following skin-transplantation. The Segura Lab at the Pratt School of Engineering has broad expertise in the design, synthesis and in vitro/in vivo characterization of hydrogel biomaterials, comprised of microporous annealed particles (MAP). We have shown MAP hydrogels can augment the regeneration of dermatologic and neurologic tissues after wounding and ischemic insult. The research associate will contribute towards projects involving synthesis of biomaterials, mouse surgeries and the performance of tissue sectioning and immunohistochemistry.

The research associate will work directly with Dr. Holly Lewis MD, PhD, resident physician with appointments in the Departments of Surgery and Biomedical Engineering. The work will be co-advised, and occur within, the laboratory of Dr. Tatiana Segura PhD, Professor of Biomedical Engineering, Neurology and Dermatology at Duke University. Relevant publications related to this work include:

As a member of this research group, you will be expected to:

·      Confer with others to review work assignments, develop plans for research experiments, and make modifications to existing procedures and techniques as required for different studies.

·      Perform a variety of complex technical duties involving state-of-the art machinery and software to conduct laboratory experiments, obtain data sets from your research, and present the experimental results.

·      Review laboratory methods, manuals, scientific journals, abstracts and other literature for information applicable to research experiments.

·      Review the work of laboratory personnel and assist in training new personnel.

A Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Sciences, Biomedical Engineering or a related field is required. We will prioritize applicants who also have the following:

·      A successful history of handling projects with multiple moving parts.

·      Experience in a “wet lab” (e.g. familiarity with pipets, centrifuges, chemical/biological substances and appropriate safety precautions, etc.)

·      Experience in histological processing of tissues for H&E and immunohistochemistry.

·      A willingness to learn on the job, and the ability to do so quickly.

·      A history of working well with others.

Expected Start Date: *** ***.        Ideal time commitment is 2 years

Interested applicants should submit CV with at least two references with contact information.
