The Associate University Librarian for Research and Public Services (RPS) provides leadership, vision, and strategic direction to advance research and instruction at Duke University Libraries (DUL). They guide, oversee, and coordinate the functions and departments responsible for providing library services in support of teaching, learning, and research and lead efforts to infuse the values of diversity equity, inclusion, and accessibility into the work of the Research and Public Services division. As a member of the Duke University Libraries’ Executive Group (EG), the AUL for RPS will help lead the development of a strategic vision for the Libraries as Duke enters its second century and embarks on a capital campaign. The AUL for Research and Public Services will be joining DUL at an exciting time of transition with a newly appointed Vice Provost for Library Affairs and several new Associate University Librarians. Once the new leadership team is established and a new strategic plan formulated the scope of responsibilities for this position may evolve.

Responsibilities • Envisions and implements strategies that support the research, teaching, and learning mission of the University. • Provides programmatic visioning, resource management, and coordination for public services functions across DUL and the campus libraries as appropriate. Aligns operations and workflows with the university’s strategic directions and secures support from key constituents and stakeholders. • Fosters and sustains an inclusive and welcoming environment for staff, students, scholars, and the general public through the development of equitable services. • Develops a collaborative work environment, building partnerships with other departments and units throughout the Libraries and University, and encouraging personnel to work across the organization as strategically appropriate. • In collaboration with the RPS leadership team, fosters the adoption of innovative, user-focused approaches to, research, instruction, and outreach to students and faculty. • Oversees the division’s budget and manages endowments and funds intended to support public services. • As a member of the Executive Group, collaborates in system-wide planning, policy development, resource allocation, and personnel management for DUL. • Participates in library fundraising and other development programs. • Supervises the heads of the following departments and libraries: Access and Delivery Services; East Campus Libraries; International and Area Studies; Natural Sciences and Engineering; Marine Lab Library • Manages workforce planning and performance management reviews, assessing and recommending training and learning opportunities; fosters the professional development of librarians and staff to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing environment. • Works across divisions on key collaborations related to collection development activities and promotes the forward-looking use of technology in support of RPS activities. • Represents the Libraries in consortia locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally and participate in university projects and initiatives as assigned. • Displays continuing growth in professional and subject knowledge and takes an active interest in the profession. Growth and interest should be demonstrated through the continuing development of professional knowledge and abilities, membership and participation in professional organizations, and service to the library, University, or community in a professional capacity. • Performs other duties and undertakes special projects as needed and assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities • Oversees a division of approximately 53 FTEs and 8 direct reports.

Education: Required: Master's degree from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent advanced degree

Experience: Required: At least five years of relevant experience related to the research lifecycle and/or advancing teaching in higher education, including demonstrated experience in research services, user/access services and/or instruction in libraries, academia, or other settings; evidence of progressively increasing supervisory or managerial responsibility; broad knowledge of the library's role in instruction and research; ability to communicate a strong vision of how discipline-based research is changing in response to new technologies and the roles libraries can play in meeting the evolving needs of scholars; strong leadership, effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills; demonstrated ability to analyze work processes and introduce appropriate solutions for greater efficiency of operations; ability to establish effective working relationships campus-wide in a collaborative and entrepreneurial environment; proven experience working closely with faculty; a record of significant professional activity; awareness of national and international issues and trends in public services, research, and instruction and ability to work independently and collaboratively in a rapidly changing environment.

Preferred: Prior experience working in an academic research library; knowledge of current uses of technology in library operations; successful record with fundraising efforts; significant participation in professional associations and/or relevant publications demonstrating leadership in the library, university, national and international programs, and initiatives; experience working in a consortial environment; successful record of developing and initiating new programs.

Salary and Benefits Salary and rank dependent on qualifications and experience. Comprehensive benefits package includes 20 days vacation, 14 holidays, 12 days sick leave; health, dental, disability and life insurance and support for professional development and training.
