The Team Lead for Original Cataloging oversees in-house and vendor MARC-metadata creation and lifecycle in a variety of formats, languages, and subjects. Leading a team whose mission is promoting inclusive and timely discovery and access to Duke University Libraries collections, you will provide guidance, expertise, and data-driven benchmarks to achieve this mission. You will also contribute original cataloging and entity management within your areas of expertise.

Responsibilities • Plans, manages, and supervises the operation of the Original Cataloging Team, responsible for cataloging resources in a variety of formats, languages, and subject areas, and for normalizing and maintaining MARC metadata post-cataloging. • In close consultation with the Department Head defines and clarifies roles and responsibilities of team staff, setting clear expectations and standards. Ensures that staff develop skills and adapt to evolving metadata processes and inclusive description practices. Monitors and evaluates staff performance. Works to create an environment that promotes respect, trust, agency, and accountability. Serves on the Resource Description Management Team. • Provides leadership in and contributes to sustainable scaled workflows for electronic resource description and vendor cataloging for print resources; provides leadership in making efficient and innovative use of available tools and technologies relevant to enterprise level description workflows. • Provides consultation or performs liaison duties to help solve technical problems, interacts collaboratively on or leads projects, and exchanges information within and outside of Duke University Libraries Technical Services. • Collects, analyzes, and reports on metrics relevant to departmental goals; uses relevant metrics in making judgments and recommendations; identifies and uses trend information in planning. • Using inclusive description practices, provides original cataloging of monographs in all formats, subjects, and languages for which there is competence. This includes performing related research as necessary, to assign descriptive and subject access points and to contribute new and enhanced records within established guidelines. • Contributes to the Program for Cooperative Cataloging, including NACO, SACO, and BIBCO. This includes entity management through creation and enhancement of authority records and recommending new and changed Library of Congress Subject Headings, and authenticating bibliographic records to national standards. Performs related research as necessary. • Actively participates in planning and procedures relating to discovery, access, retrieval, and management of objects in ILS, discovery, and digital repository systems. Advises on the application of appropriate current and emerging cataloging/metadata schema to facilitate access to digital resources and physical collections. • Displays continuing growth in professional and subject knowledge and takes an active interest in the profession. Growth and interest should be demonstrated through continuing development of professional knowledge and abilities, membership and participation in professional organizations, and service to the library, University, or community in a professional capacity. • Other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities • Supervises 7 employees (6.75 FTE)

Education: Required: Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program or an equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the conceptual, analytical, and interpersonal skills required to manage and lead a critical library program.

Experience: Required: Demonstrated strong leadership skills through progressively challenging work assignments; experience training catalogers; three years of original cataloging experience in an academic or research library; thorough knowledge of RDA, the LC-PCC Policy Statements, LC Subject Headings, LC classification, and MARC21; thorough knowledge of the NACO and BIBCO programs of the PCC; demonstrated ability to analyze and resolve complex cataloging issues and make policy decisions; experience with at least one bibliographic utility and local library system (OCLC and Aleph preferred); working knowledge of, or fluency in, a second language; demonstrated ability to apply analysis of metrics to workflow and process planning and reporting.

Preferred: Two years of supervisory experience; experience in planning for and implementing automated workflow solutions; experience in developing standards for bibliographic control of electronic resources; working knowledge of, or fluency in, Russian, Chinese, or Hebrew languages; demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and independently with various groups within a complex organization and dynamic team environment; project management experience with workflows; experience with web-based metadata technologies; advanced knowledge of the application of technology to bibliographic control.

Salary and Benefits Salary and rank dependent on qualifications and experience; the anticipated range is $63,000-$75,000. Comprehensive benefits package includes 20 days vacation, 13 holidays, 12 days sick leave; health, dental, disability and life insurance and support for professional development and training.
