Duke University's Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program is an accelerated, 12-month teacher preparation and licensure program that prepares candidates to enter classrooms as culturally responsive educators equipped with the skills and content knowledge needed to support the learning of all students.

The position is responsible for supporting the planning, coordination, and supervision of significant components of the instructional  mission of the MAT program. The position directly supports and coordinates daily administration of the MAT program including curriculum development; applicant/candidate support (recruitment, admissions, orientation; clinical supervision); clinical faculty and mentor teacher support; and grant management.

Occupational Summary:

Clinical Supervision – 40%

As the clinical supervisor, the assistant director is responsible for supervising teacher candidates during their student teaching experience.

·       Serve as a liaison between the University and school placement sites.

·       Provide written evaluations of the teacher candidate’s performance in accordance with Duke MAT internship policies.

·       Make regularly scheduled supervisory visits at placement schools, including pre-observation conferences, observations, and post-observation conferences with teacher candidates and mentor teachers.

·       Conduct regularly scheduled instructional support sessions with teacher candidates.

·       Confer with MAT clinical faculty and mentor teachers about candidate progress/performance

·       Co-conduct mid (Fall) and summative (Spring) conferences with teacher candidates and their mentor teachers, providing teacher candidates with a formative evaluation.

·       Prepare Certification of Teaching Capacity forms; assist mentor teachers with completion of forms needed for candidates to apply for NC teaching license.

Clinical Faculty Support – 10%

·       Support the MAT Director and the Coordinator of Teacher Preparation with recruitment of mentor teachers throughout the year, with particular focus on recruiting mentor teachers of color.  

·       Develop MAT mentor teacher recruitment, orientation, and support materials.

·       Facilitate orientations, mentor training, and other relevant professional development sessions designed to ensure mentor teachers are effectively prepared to provide intensive support to MAT teaching candidates during their clinical experiences.

·       In collaboration with the Program in Education’s Assessment Coordinator, conduct bi-annual mentor teacher evaluations.

·       Regularly meet with mentor teachers about teacher candidates’ progress; to address mentor
teacher concerns; and to provide individualized support.

Curricular Support – 10%

·       Assist with facilitation of MAT courses as needed based on enrollment.

·       Collaborate with Program in Education’s Coordinator of Teacher Preparation to determine methods for supporting candidate preparedness for the edTPA assessment.

·       Advise subject-area methods instructors

Recruitment, Admissions, and Orientation  - 20%

·       Lead recruitment efforts for the MAT program targeted at undergraduate students and mid-career professionals.

·       Counsel prospective candidates throughout the year; connect prospective applicants with current students and arrange for them to visit classes.

·       Compile and share periodic application status reports (i.e., applicant count, content areas, etc.)

·       In collaboration with the MAT director, manage the process for selecting Duke Faculty to serve on the MAT admission committee.

·       Regularly evaluate the recruitment, admissions, and orientation process and make recommendations for changes/modifications that will enhance effectiveness.

·       Serve on the MAT admissions committee.

·       Coordinate, schedule, and participate in interviews with candidates and faculty advisors

·       Lead incoming cohort orientation during summer session II (including introduction to Durham and Durham’s history)

·       Work with Durham Public School’s HR department to schedule new teacher orientation and to collect all required health and background check forms from students.

Fellowship/Scholarship/Grant Administration  - 10%

§   Assist with grant writing and reporting

·       Manage the Noyce Scholars Fellowship and Durham Teaching Fellows Programs

·       Lead the Noyce mentoring program

·       Plan, coordinate, and lead STEM professional development events (i.e., Noyce Conference)

·       Work with financial aid office to determine each graduate’s status in fulfilling forgivable loan requirements

·       Manage the administration of stipends and oversee reimbursement requests from fellows.

Administrative Support and Outreach  - 10%

·       Develop and manage external outreach efforts to current candidates and alumni.

·       Compile a database of MAT alumni.

·       Develop and implement a plan for maintaining consistent communication/connection with alumni.

·       Develop an active alumni network through the hosting of panel discussions; forging strong connections between alumni and current/prospective students.

·       Assist the Program in Education’s Assessment Coordinator with the collection of programming data (course and mentor teacher evaluations; mentor teacher feedback; licensure assessment data); support annual program and accreditation report preparation

 

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Requires a relevant post-baccalaureate degree with a minimum of three (3) years or greater of related professional experience in teacher education/teacher preparation or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.

·       Strong coaching and mentorship skills

·       Master’s degree or higher

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

·       Experience in beginning teacher coaching and development within a culturally responsive and sustaining framework

·       Experience in program development and implementation of curriculum
