The McHenry Lab at Duke University (https://www.mchenry-lab.org) is seeking to hire a motivated individual for a full-time Associate in Research position. The lab uses state-of-the-art technology in mouse models, to study neural circuits that regulate social and emotional processing, with translation relevance to a range of human conditions, including autism and mood disorders. The Associate in Research position is open for immediate occupancy. Initial appointment will be for one year, with renewal based on grant support and successful performance. The candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to scientific experiments and co-author publication of results. 

The candidate must be detail-oriented, proactive, well organized, consistent, and able to self-manage multiple and changing priorities as needed to move experiments and the research program forward, in a fast-paced environment. The candidate must be receptive to instruction and feedback with attention to detail and proactively follow up after meetings to meet lab agendas and goals in a timely manner to see tasks through to completion with high quality. The candidate must be flexible, efficient, and willing to function in a high-paced environment and collaborate with a range of personalities and individuals at various career stages. Excellent communication skills, a strong commitment to research and work ethic, and a positive attitude are required for this team-based environment. The candidate must conduct themselves in a professional manner, respond promptly to requests, adhere to standard procedures and expectations set forth by the lab, maintain clear and reproducible lab records, be honest, ethical, and transparent in all animal and experimental work performed, be respectful and inclusive of all individuals in this diverse work environment. 

Work Performed 

Confer with all lab members, including principal investigator, Postdocs, and students, to perform day-to-day aspects of the lab and ongoing experiments, perform technical and animal procedures for data collection, data entry, data processing, data analysis, lab website, physical/electronic records, schedules, and to help maintain proper order of physical testing space/equipment. 

Perform ordering, invoicing, and recording keeping. Maintain sufficient inventory of material, supplies. 

Oversee mouse breeding and colony, including daily health checks, breeding, weaning, genotyping, supportive care, euthanasia, and record keeping. 

Perform a variety of animal and technical experimental data collection activities involved in conducting physical and other research laboratory tests and experiments to obtain data for research purposes and assemble data sets from experimental results. This will include a range of procedures including but not limited to behavioral data collection, genotyping, microscope imaging, data entry and analysis, histology and various tissue collection and processing, wet lab procedures (e.g., cryostat tissue sectioning, immunohistochemistry, iDISCO), and animal care, surgeries and various procedures. 

Develop and maintain project plans and scheduling; help maintain and modify active SOP documents, help manage daily lab operations and equipment, troubleshoot procedures, maintain active protocols for safety and animal procedures and make amendments to existing protocols. 

Help review and prepare laboratory methods, manuals, scientific journals, abstracts and other literature for information applicable to research experiments or daily lab activities. Review animal and technical entry level work of lower-level laboratory personnel and assist in training new personnel on mouse handling related procedures. Oversee day-to-day activities, oversee and assist with management of lab records and data; oversee animal and safety procedures, help maintain general working order of the lab and equipment, help train incoming members and assist others. Communicate issues transparently as they arise with team members and PI. 

Contribute to preparation and revision of scientific documents and writing such as literature reviews, data figure assembly and analysis, data manuscripts, and grants. 

Due to the nature of the specialized needs of the live animal colony and advanced technical procedures, regular work falls outside of normal business hours and holidays. Animal care will typically include a colony check anticipated at least one weekend per week, with more or less depending on experimental and colony demands, and some holidays. Flexibility outside of required animal and experimental work is possible and will be set through discussion with the PI.

Minimum Qualifications 

Education: The applicant must hold a B.S. in Neuroscience, Biology, Chemistry, or a related science discipline and a basic understanding of basic neuroscience principles. 

Experience: Prior work in basic neuroscience or biomedical research to include experience with wet lab procedures and assistance with data collection and analysis. Preference for rodent based lab studies and/or computer programming skills in MATLAB and/or Python. Training for other aspects of the job will be provided. Positive attitude, work ethic, and other non-technical skills will be strongly valued.
