We support discovery science experiments in Illinois and at locations around the world, including deep underground mines in South Dakota and Canada, mountaintops in Arizona and Chile, and the South Pole!

You Will:

Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (known as Fermilab) seeks highly qualified candidates for one Postdoctoral Research Associate position in the Physics Simulation Department of the Computational Science and Artificial Intelligence Directorate. The Research Associate’s portfolio will include software development related to simulations of neutrino-nucleus interactions, with a particular emphasis on the needs of the Short Baseline Neutrino program. The selected candidate will have the opportunity to play a leading role in the MicroBooNE and SBND experiments, with substantial freedom to pursue physics results according to their interests. Candidates with suitable preparation may also devote a portion of their time to phenomenological studies relevant to Fermilab neutrino experiments.

Every effort will be made to help and guide a Fermilab Research Associate to design their own research program and maintain support so that they have the chance to produce physics results.

The position is for a period of up to three (3) years, with the potential for extension considered on a yearly basis thereafter, and subject to continued funding.

We Are Looking For:

  • Ph.D. in particle physics, nuclear physics, or another relevant subject by the time of the appointment. Candidates with experimental, theoretical, and/or computational backgrounds will be considered.
  • Proven experience in conducting independent scientific research
  • Programming experience in C++
  • Strong mathematical and analytical skills

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience in developing physics event generators and/or other Monte Carlo simulation codes
  • Experience with collaborative software development tools (e.g., Git)
  • Research interest in neutrino-nucleus scattering and related phenomena
